Under-21s report: Chelsea 1 Middlesbrough 0
Mon 21 Dec 2015
Chelsea Under-21s rounded off Academy action for 2015 with victory over
Middlesbrough at Cobham this evening (Monday).
Kasey Palmer's third-minute goal was enough to settle a contest the home
side dominated as Adi Viveash's side jumped a place in the Under-21
Premier League table. The Blues created a string of opportunities but
could not add to their solitary early goal and had to rely upon a
spectacular late double save from Bradley Collins to preserve a
well-earned three points.
There were three changes from the side that beat Celtic 5-0 in the last
Under-21 outing over a fortnight previously as Collins, Trevoh Chalobah
and Jay Dasilva came into the side. Collins started between the sticks
protected by a back three of Chalobah, Fikayo Tomori and Jake
Clarke-Salter as Adi Viveash opted for a 3-4-2-1 system.
Fankaty Dabo and Dasilva lined up at right wing-back and left wing-back
respectively, with captain Charlie Colkett and Mukhtar Ali partnering each
other in central midfield. Charly Musonda and Palmer started in a more
advanced central midfield role, with Tammy Abraham leading the line up
front.
It took the Blues just four minutes to take the lead against Celtic and
they were able to achieve the same feat a minute earlier as they got off
to a perfect start on a chilly night at Cobham.
The goal was created following a lovely move and some wonderful individual
work from Musonda, who raced away from three defenders before finding
Abraham down the left. The striker's movement had created space in the
centre and he was able to find the supporting Palmer, who finished
expertly into the bottom far corner for ninth goal of the campaign in all
competitions.
The visitors responded and Collins made his first stop of the evening
after 10 minutes as he denied Harrison Chapman's low strike following good
work from the forward down the left. It was from the left flank where the
danger continued to be fashioned and Collins was required again moments
later to punch a loose ball clear as Joao Morelli looked to get on the end
of a teasing inswinging delivery.
Yet Viveash's side soon settled into the contest and were able to gain
control of the game in midfield courtesy of added manpower in central
areas. Meanwhile, Dabo and Dasilva continued to provide the width and the
former teed up a great chance for Musonda after 20 minutes with a
brilliant cross. However, the young Belgian's flying header was straight
at keeper Joe Fryer.
Musonda continued to keep Fryer busy as the stopper did well to hold on to
a fierce, bending strike from 25 yards out, before Palmer's swerving
attempt was watched well and gathered by the Boro shot-stopper.
The momentum remained with the hosts for the rest of the half as Abraham
came within inches of connecting to Dasilva's fierce centre across the
face of goal and Musonda dragged a shot just wide following a dangerous
break forward.
Fryer denied Musonda again with a fingertip save from the midfielder's
free-kick, while Middlesbrough provided a reminder of their threat as
Morelli blasted off-target with a good chance. Colkett saw a low shot
blocked well before Fryer pushed his drive away to safety at the near post
in the final action of the half.
The game followed a similar pattern in the second period as Abraham fired
wide following a short corner routine and Mark Kitching bravely threw his
body in the way of a well-connected drive from Musonda. Down the other
end, Bryn Morris shot high and wide and Chapman provided a teasing centre
across the face of goal that narrowly evaded the supporting cast.
Colkett bent a free-kick just over as the half wore on with the Blues
still holding a narrow advantage, while Palmer came within inches of
settling the contest with 20 minutes remaining as his improvised flick
towards goal flew just wide of the far post.
Lewis Maloney fashioned some space to fire at goal but failed to trouble
Collins with a rising shot. Fryer continued to be put to the test in the
Boro goal as Abraham raced on to a brilliant first-time pass from Dabo and
arrowed a strike towards the top corner that the keeper clawed away.
As the minutes ticked by, Middlesbrough sensed the opportunity to punish
our profligacy and snatch a point. They should have done just that with
five minutes remaining as Collins produced a spectacular double save from
point-blank range to preserve his clean sheet and ensure back-to-back wins
for the Under-21s for the first time this season.

After the game, Adi Viveash reflected on ending a fantastic calendar year
for the Chelsea Academy with three well-earned league points. Speaking to
the official Chelsea website, he said: 'It's a really positive way for us
to end what has been a fantastic 12 months for the Academy.
'We've obviously won the UEFA Youth League and retained the FA Youth Cup,
which were both major achievements, and now six of the team that started
in the Youth League final in Nyon are playing top-level first-team
European football. The youth team are storming their league and we won our
Youth League group this season quite comfortably so there's much to be
admired for everyone's work.
'Having said that, it has been a challenging six months for us and I
thought tonight showed the boys again how hard you have to work to get a
result at this level. We played some fantastic football and deserved to
win by more but when their keeper makes four very good saves it then gets
nervy at the end, especially when you haven't won many games.
'That was probably the most pleasing part of the night for me, though. We
dealt with that part of the game really well with a 17-year-old and two
18-year-olds at the back and then Brad makes a top-drawer save at the end
to win the points. The way we closed the game out in the final 15 minutes
was sensational because we just killed it by controlling the football and
that impressed me so much.
'It was a welcome win and the boys can now look forward to the second half
of the season. I can see the signs of improvement and we have some very
good young players emerging from the youth team group as well. They worked
their socks off tonight and I take my hat off to them for that; they're a
good group who I obviously push hard every day. That's my job but I hope
they see the benefits of that in the end like the boys that are now
playing in first teams have because they've gone through exactly the same
process.'
