Under-18s report: Chelsea 1 Fulham 0
Sat 6 Feb 2016
Our Under-18s are a point away from securing the Under-18 Premier League
South title following a hard-fought home victory over Fulham.
A second-half goal from Miro Muheim proved the difference and, although Ike
Ugbo's saved penalty ensured a battle until the final whistle, a dogged
display was rewarded with three crucial points. The youngsters need just a
point from their final regional fixture of the campaign against Arsenal
next weekend to mathematically seal back-to-back Southern league titles.
Joe Edwards made four changes to the side that were beaten 2-0 at Reading
last weekend, with Tuesday's FA Youth Cup tie at AFC Wimbledon also in
mind. There were starts for two Under-16 schoolboys as goalkeeper Jamie
Cumming made his youth team debut, while Dujon Sterling lined up alongside
Swedish pair Joseph Colley and Ali Suljic in a three-man defence.
Ugbo, with 15 goals in 13 league appearances this season, continued to
lead the line up front and was assisted by a supporting cast of Isaac
Christie-Davies and Mukhtar Ali. Charlie Wakefield and Muheim operated at
right wing-back and left wing-back respectively, with captain Ruben Sammut
partnering Luke McCormick in central midfield.
In extremely blustery conditions at the Cobham training ground, the hosts
came close to taking an early lead against their west London rivals.
Wakefield supplied the overlapping Ali down the right channel and the
18-year-old arrowed a low shot towards the far bottom corner, though his
effort bounced back off the base of the post with goalkeeper Magnus Norman
beaten.
Muheim was proving a useful outlet for Edwards's side as he fired a
free-kick narrowly over before warming the palms of Norman with a stinging
drive from almost 30 yards out that the visiting stopper did well to keep
hold of.
Ugbo was the beneficiary of the best chance of the half with 30 minutes on
the clock as Ali slid a neat pass forward to find the striker's run in
behind, however the England youth international's effort dragged wide of
the far post.
Down the other end, Micolaj Kwietniewski saw his strike deflected away
from danger, yet it was the Blues ending the first period in the
ascendancy as Norman punched clear Christie-Davies's teasing free-kick and
then Jerome Opoku did well to bravely block another Christie-Davies effort.
Kwietniewski fired over again shortly after the restart before the league
leaders finally found the breakthrough on the hour mark. Ugbo retrieved
possession on halfway and fed the ball to Muheim, who led a quick charge
forward on the break. The Swiss winger had support from Wakefield on the
far side yet opted to go it alone and finished beyond Norman with
precision for his eighth goal of the season.
The increasingly difficult conditions would ensure there was still plenty
of life in the game, particularly with the hosts now kicking into the
fierce wind. Suljic defended brilliantly to block from Jon Dagur
Thorsteinsson and the Swede put his body on the line again moments later
to preserve our lead.
With 15 minutes remaining, the Blues were handed a golden opportunity to
extend their lead as Sterling was upended in the box after advancing from
the left flank. Ugbo stepped up from 12 yards out but was thwarted by an
excellent diving stop from Norman down low to his left.
Christie-Davies prodded over the crossbar late on and we continued to
defend doggedly to secure the victory that takes us six points clear of
Reading at the top of the league table. The Royals are the only side who
can mathematically topple us in their two remaining games, however our
goal difference is now +15 better than theirs. Nevertheless, a point in
our final regional fixture next Saturday 13 February against Arsenal will
see us crowned Under-18 Premier League South champions for a second
successive year.
== Manager reaction ==
After the game, Joe Edwards reflected on a gutsy display from his side and
praised the positive reaction of his players following last week's defeat
in Berkshire.
'Games against Fulham are always tough to get results,' he told the
official Chelsea website, 'but we could see from the minute we turned up
this morning that it was going to be really difficult for either team to
play particularly good football or control the game easily because of the
conditions.
'We won the toss and decided to switch ends so we had the wind with us in
the first half with the aim being to really impose ourselves on the game
from the off. Even though we dominated and the game was played
predominantly in their half, you do realise when half-time comes and you
haven't got the breakthrough that the task is now even more difficult for
the second half.
'It asked a question of us mentally but we responded well to what did feel
like a little setback halfway through the game and we probably created
more chances and looked more threatening after the break.
'The competition for places in this team is so strong and you have to take
your opportunities when they come along so it was good for Miro to take
his goal today. Ike was excellent after a disappointing performance at
Reading last weekend; we wanted a reaction from him and he gave us a
massive outlet in terms of holding the ball up in the second half.
'You have to say it's a good debut for Jamie Cumming too. It's probably
the worst day you could ask for a young keeper to make their debut but I
thought his kicking and composure were really good.
'It was a big three points in trying to secure the southern section title
so we knew that we were going to have to do whatever we could in those
difficult conditions to get the win. In the end, I thought we were
deserved winners. We're 100 per cent in terms of winning at home and we'd
like to maintain that in our final game of this section against Arsenal
next week.'
-In other news at the Academy this week, Under-21 midfielders Kasey Palmer
and Kyle Scott have both signed new contracts, committing them to the club
until the end of the 2018/19 campaign. Scott, who turned 18 in December,
has made 17 appearances this term and scored twice. Palmer, an age group
older, has scored 11 times in 16 appearances, including three in four in
the UEFA Youth League.
