Bulgaria were the opposition as Keith Downing's side began the tournament in Georgia, where the temperature reached a sweltering 38 degrees centigrade, with a quartet of our youngsters named in the starting line-up. Three of those lined up in the back four as Jay Dasilva captained the team at left-back, Trevoh Chalobah started at centre-back and Dujon Sterling at right-back. Mason Mount was last month named the Chelsea Academy Player of the Year and the 18-year-old continued his stellar season by netting the opening goal inside a minute. It was a goal in Tbilisi but made in Chelsea as Sterling supplied the delivery from the right and the midfielder found the bottom corner with a left-footed finish. Bulgaria responded well and created good opportunities to level before the break, with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale particularly responsible for keeping England ahead with a string of impressive saves. The interval came at an ideal time for Downing's youngsters and they doubled their advantage within four minutes of the restart as Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon netted with a composed low strike. Jacob Maddox was introduced from the bench for the final seven minutes, bringing the Chelsea contingent on the field to five as the three points were safely secured. Reece James was an unused substitute. England return to action in Group B on Thursday when they face the Netherlands before the group stage finishes against Germany on Sunday. In yesterday's Group A action, Joseph Colley played 90 minutes as Sweden were beaten 2-1 by Czech Republic in their opener. The top two from each group advance to the semi-finals. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/07/young-lions-into-semis.html Young Lions close to semis Thu 6 Jul 2017 England Under-19s moved close to a place in the semi-finals of the European Championship for their age group following a deserved 1-0 win over the Netherlands. The result followed Monday's 2-0 victory over Bulgaria and means Keith Downing's youngsters will join Portugal in confirming a last-four spot if Bulgaria and Germany draw later this evening. The Under-19s are bidding to become the fourth England age group to reach that stage of their main tournament this summer. Four Chelsea Academy representatives featured from the start in Georgia, just as they had in the group opener. Captain Jay Dasilva, Trevoh Chalobah and Dujon Sterling made up three-quarters of the back four, while Mason Mount lined up in midfield. Reece James and Jacob Maddox were unused substitutes. Mount netted the opener on Monday and the 18-year-old came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, collecting a cross from Ryan Sessegnon before his low strike was blocked on the line. The midfielder then stole possession from the Dutch on the edge of their 18-yard box and fed it quickly to Lukas Nmecha but the Manchester City striker's shot deflected inches wide. England grew stronger after the restart and pushed for a winning goal that would hand them the initiative in Group B. Mount was denied again, this time by the goalkeeper after cutting inside dangerously, before Ben Brereton came off the bench to star as the match-winner, prodding home from close range six minutes from time. It was a second consecutive clean sheet at the tournament for a defence with a strong Chelsea presence. Chalobah, who celebrated his 18th birthday in Tbilisi yesterday, made a number of impressive blocks in his own area, while Sterling and Dasilva provided both defensive solidity and attacking width from full-back. The win took the young Lions to six points from six in the group following five wins from six games in qualification. A point against Germany on Sunday will confirm their semi-final position as group winners. In Group A yesterday, a Sweden side with Joseph Colley at centre-back lost narrowly to Georgia, the hosts. It leaves the Swedes bottom and unable to advance from the group stage. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/07/ four-start-as-england-u-19s-advance.html Chelsea five feature as England U-19s advance Sun 9 Jul 2017 England advanced to the semi-finals at the Under-19 European Championship following an impressive victory against Germany in their final group game. It means Keith Downing's side are the fourth England age group to reach that stage of their main tournament this summer after teams triumphed at the Under-20 World Cup, were runners-up at the Under-17 Euros and beaten in the last four at the Under-21 Euros. The young Lions will meet the Czech Republic in the semi-final on Wednesday, with Portugal taking on Netherlands in the other tie. Chelsea were once again the best-represented club side for England as Jay Dasilva captained the team alongside Dujon Sterling and Trevoh Chalobah in the back four. Mason Mount kept his place in midfield while Reece James was a second-half substitute. Jacob Maddox was unused from the bench. Chalobah marked his 18th birthday last week but his celebratory mood was scuppered early on as he was forced to withdraw from the action after landing awkwardly on his ankle. It could have been worse for England as Dennis Geiger hit the crossbar before the break but they quickly raced into a 2-0 lead as Ben Brereton bagged a brace within 12 minutes. The first came from the penalty spot and the second was teed up by the impressive Mount, the first of his hat-trick of assists. The 18-year-old midfielder darted cleverly into space in the 18-yard box and cut a perfect low ball back for the Nottingham Forest striker to dispatch with a confident first-time finish. Germany needed a win to make it to the semi-finals and reduced the deficit with a quarter of an hour remaining but their efforts at launching a comeback fell flat. Within eight minutes, they were 4-1 behind and while Ryan Sessegnon was the scorer on both occasions, Mount continued his role of creator-in-chief. His floated clip in behind the German back four was exquisite and pitched perfectly into the path of the Fulham full-back, who finished emphatically, before Sessegnon beat the keeper again a few moments later with a powerful low strike. The victory means England progress with a 100 per cent winning record and will meet the Czech Republic in three days’ time aiming to reach the tournament final for the first time in 12 years.
