Mason Mount turned in another decisive display for the young Lions, claiming assists for both goals, while Jay Dasilva captained the side from left-back and Dujon Sterling lined up on the opposite flank. After starting the semi-final victory over the Czech Republic, Jacob Maddox and Reece James were unused substitutes, while Trevoh Chalobah's tournament was cut short by injury after the group stage. All six will pick up medals, with all but Dasilva adding to their haul of Under-18 club silverware picked up this season. The final in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi began in nervy fashion and there was little to separate the two sides at the halfway point. If the first period lacked key talking points, the restart provided the action and England were in front just five minutes into the second half. Aston Villa defender Easah Suliman claimed the goal, nodding in the rebound as Mount's bending free-kick bounced low and thumped the right post. However, the advantage lasted for just six minutes and Sterling was guilty of a misjudgement to restore parity for Portugal. The defender watched as a cross from the right sailed towards him at the far post before he sliced a left-footed clearance beyond his own goalkeeper. The 17-year-old had his head in his hands as he crouched to the ground in disbelief but Keith Downing's side soon rallied in the manner of all good sides on the big occasion. As Portugal grew stronger and more dangerous, England pressing high up the right flank forced a mistake and fashioned the chance for Mount to run towards goal. The Chelsea Academy Player of the Year barely looked up as he drove into the box before squaring a perfect pass for Lukas Nmecha to tap the ball into an empty net. It was a significant moment in the final and took Mount on to five assists, a tournament high. The final 20 minutes were not without drama. Tayo Edun was dismissed as England were forced to see out the final a man down and Portugal sent in a flurry of corners as the officials played out five minutes of stoppage time. The memory of England's Under-17 side conceding a last-minute equaliser to Spain in their European final earlier in the summer, before losing on penalties, loomed large. The Portuguese goalkeeper got on the end of one final set-piece but wasted his headed opportunity and England were left celebrating once again. The triumph caps a remarkable summer for England's youngsters, with Chelsea involvement prominent across the board.
