YOUNG ENGLAND EXIT EUROS

England Under-19s, with Nathaniel Chalobah in the side, have been knocked
out of the European Under 19 Championships at the semi-final stage, losing
to Greece in extra-time.
On a rainy afternoon in Estonia, 10-man Greece who were a goal up fought a
rearguard action throughout the second-half as England patiently stuck to
their attacking plan, piercing the defence just once despite several
chances. That goal was 57 minutes into the game when Arsenal's Benik Afobe
headed in a left-wing cross.
Greece had gone ahead on 38 minutes, the goal also a header, this time
from a corner and then had their goalkeeper sent off shortly after
half-time. It was a highly questionable decision by the referee as the
dismissed player appeared to touch the ball as Afobe took it around him.
England were awarded a penalty but West Brom's Saido Berahino shot over.
The score was 1-1 after 90 minutes and it was a mistake by Chalobah, who
was playing at right-back, that lead to the winner in the second period of
extra time. His loose header back was seized upon for a chip over the
keeper and despite a late shout for another penalty, England were out.

STURRIDGE PLAYS 45 IN OLYMPIC REHEARSAL

Daniel Sturridge and Ryan Bertrand were given starts in Team GB men's
Olympic warm-up match against Brazil in Middlesbrough, but were on the end
of a defeat.
It was an important fitness test for Sturridge after rejoining the squad
for training on Monday following a bout of meningitis and he will be
further assessed tomorrow. Bertrand was started in an unfamiliar
right-back position.
Team GB were 2-0 down by half-time, Sandro scoring from a set-piece and
Neymar netting a penalty. Sturridge had a deflected shot that didn't hit
its target before the interval during which both he and Bertrand were
replaced.
Former Chelsea players Scott Sinclair and Jack Cork were two of the four
substitutes introduced. The final score was 2-0.
Team GB's women's team also played a match on Friday, Chelsea Ladies'
Claire Rafferty coming on for the final seven minutes of a 0-0 draw, GB
hitting the woodwork in the second half.
The men begin the Olympics against Senegal in Manchester on 26 July. The
women play New Zealand the day before.
