The 27-year-old, on loan this season at Reading, played at left-back against Morocco in a game in which the goalscoring opportunities came late on. The winner was on 83 minutes, scored by former Southampton player Sofiane Boufal. Shortly before that, Morocco keeper Bono saved Ghana's one decent effort from Joseph Paintsil with a good stop at the other end from Jojo Wollacott right at the end preventing a 2-0 defeat. Earlier in the second half, a Baba cross had made an opportunity for Andre Ayew who shot over. Morocco did not include Hakim Ziyech in their squad for the tournament which started yesterday in Cameroon. Senegal were in action earlier in the day but without Edouard Mendy who has tested positive for Covid-19. His nation still won 1-0 thanks to a Sadio Mane penalty seven minutes into added time. Having missed the opening two group games following a positive Covid test, Mendy returned against Malawi and although the much-fancied Senegalese did not sparkle, a 0-0 draw was enough for top spot in their group. Mendy might have needed to save a penalty to secure that point had the referee not reviewed a second-half decision on the advice of VAR, but the freshly crowned FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year was largely untroubled after the break. He survived a Malawi shot that flew over his bar early in the game and then a free-kick on half-an-hour that was deflected past his post. Senegal (in white) had to do plenty of defending in the first half They improved and shortly after half-time, Mendy's opposite number, Charles Thom, was finally called into serious action when he tipped over a header by Strasbourg striker Habib Diallo after Kalidou Koulibaly had flicked on a free-kick. PSG's Abdou Diallo then headed over the Malawi bar and his club team-mate Idrissa Gueye forced a save with a free-kick from out wide. With quarter-of-an-hour remaining, the ref pointed to the penalty spot for a foul by Malawi's Yamikani Chester but changed his mind after viewing it on the screen and it was Senegal who applied the late pressure, without breaking through. Senegal will now play one of the third-place sides next Tuesday. Ghana and Baba Rahman however are going home after a shock 3-2 defeat against Comoros who are playing their first tournament. Indeed their goals were the first they have scored at this Africa Cup of Nations and they went 2-0 up against a Ghana side who were reduced to 10 men when 1-0 down, when Andre Ayew was sent-off after a VAR review on his challenge on the goalkeeper. The four-times winners pulled the score back to 2-2 but were sunk by another Comoros goal with five minutes left on the clock. Senegal went into this last-16 tie as strong favourites after progressing through their group unbeaten without conceding a goal - although hitting the net just once themselves, from the penalty spot - and facing a Cape Verde side who qualified as the best of the third-placed teams. However, they were frustrated by the underdogs' defensive approach for long periods, even if Mendy wasn't required to work too hard for his clean sheet on this occasion Senegal made a fast start, trying to take the game to their opponents as befitting one of the tournament favourites, and weren't far from taking an early lead when Liverpool's Sadio Mane hit the post with just 30 seconds on the clock. Cape Verde midfielder Andrade is sent off after a video review To say it was a quiet first half for Edouard Mendy would be an understatement, as Cape Verde's plan to pack their defence left them with little attacking threat, failing to muster a single shot or corner in the opening 45 minutes. That left the Chelsea goalkeeper largely a spectator, simply required to gather up the occasional long clearance. When Mendy was called into action, from Cape Verde's first corner 10 minutes into the second half, he nearly got an assist, after comfortably gathering the loose ball and spotting the opportunity to quickly launch a kick over the opposition's defence for Mane to chase. The other goalkeeper Vozinha raced out of his box to head clear, but was beaten to it by Mane, resulting in a sickening collision. Both players were down for some time and the keeper was clearly unable to continue as he swayed to his feet. A substitute was being prepared, but the decision was then made for them as, following another video review, the referee showed the keeper a red card, reducing Cape Verde to nine men for the last half-an-hour. That proved to be the game-changing moment, as Senegal instantly piled on the pressure while Cape Verde attempted to regroup and took the lead just two minutes later. Mane opened the scoring despite struggling with a head injury It was to be Mane's last involvement, though, as during a lengthy delay while the referee checked the video for a possible infringement in the build-up to his goal, which came to nothing, the Senegal captain went to ground and signalled he would be unable to continue due to the affects of his head injury. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Cape Verde tried to fight back, but Mendy remained untroubled throughout until Senegal got their second goal in injury time, Mane's replacement Bamba Dieng finishing off a quick counter to make their progress secure. In a game of high drama, plenty VAR-based, both sides played the vast majority of it with 10 players and a further two red cards, both shown to Liverpool keeper Alisson, were withdrawn on review. Brazil took the lead early on in Quito but their opponents equalised late in the game for a 1-1 draw. Thiago Silva's team secured their place at the World Cup in Qatar back in November. They had four qualifiers left to play going into a match against an Ecuador side very much in the shake-up for one of two remaining South American qualification places (Argentina are also already through). Thiago Silva's team taking an early lead Ecuador hit the net in the second half but had the goal ruled out for the ball having gone out of play and then they had a penalty given but then taken away when the referee reviewed it. Thiago Silva and his colleagues looked to be heading to victory but with quarter-of-an-hour remaining, a near-post corner headed in by defender Felix Torres levelled the scores. That was not the end of the action as in added time, a penalty and a second yellow card were awarded against Alisson but after a lengthy VAR process, it was decided he had punched the ball marginally before making contact with an opponent (pictured top) so both decisions were overturned and the chance for Ecuador to turn one point into three evaporated. In sub-zero temperatures in Ohio, Gregg Berhalter's side had to be patient in breaking down a stubborn El Salvador side, with FC Dallas forward Jesus Ferreira spurning two decent early opportunities to open the scoring.
