Chelsea Here Chelsea There: Gallagher helps Palace reach FA Cup semis,
Colwill and Lawrence return from injury
21 Mar 2022
In our weekly round-up of the action involving Chelsea players on loan,
Conor Gallagher continued to impress in two big matches, while two
defenders returned to action following spells on the sidelines...

It was a good week for Conor Gallagher and Crystal Place, both in the
Premier League and FA Cup, albeit with two very different performances.
First, the midfielder was named Man of the Match for his part in an
impressive defensive effort to keep leaders Manchester City at bay and
make it five games unbeaten for the Eagles with a 0-0 draw which boosted
their chances of getting into the top half of the table.
Gallagher featured throughout again as Palace hosted Everton in the FA Cup
quarter-finals on Sunday. The home side had to withstand some early
pressure, but then took control of the tie with the midfielder influential
again, dictating the tempo as they romped to an emphatic 4-0 victory,
setting up a semi-final against Chelsea at Wembley.
There will be no trip to Wembley for Armando Broja, though, after
Southampton were eliminated 4-1 by Manchester City in the FA Cup
quarter-finals. The scoreline was harsh on the Saints, who were in
contention for much of the tie, but the tide had turned when Broja was
introduced from the bench shortly after Man City had gone 2-1 up from the
penalty spot in the second half.

FA Cup semi-finals
Coventry City's promotion chances took a dent as they were beaten 2-0 at
home by Hull City and drew 1-1 at Derby County. Jake Clarke-Salter and Ian
Maatsen both started the first of those matches and Maatsen looked like he
had pulled a goal back for the Sky Blues.
Imagery appeared to show his shot crossing the line before being cleared,
but controversially the goal-line technology was not triggered. At Derby,
Maatsen replaced the injured Clarke-Salter 13 minutes into a frustrating
draw, although other results mean they are within six points of the
play-offs with a game in hand.
Levi Colwill made his first start for nearly a month following injury as
Huddersfield Town travelled to Milwall with a chance to go level on points
with second-place Bournemouth in the automatic promotion spots. However,
their 17-game unbeaten run came to an end as they were beaten 2-0, with
Tino Anjorin joining the action in the second half.

Both players came off the bench as the Terriers hosted Bournemouth at the
weekend, but a heavy 3-0 defeat left them six points behind their
promotion rivals, having played three games more.
That is despite Bournemouth being held to a 1-1 draw by Reading and Danny
Drinkwater last Tuesday. The midfielder then helped the Royals to a 1-0
victory at home against another side in the promotion race, Blackburn
Rovers, taking them five points clear of the relegation zone.
Dujon Sterling helped Blackpool consolidate their place in mid-table with
an entertaining 0-0 draw at home with promotion-chasing Sheffield United.
The game could have gone either way, with the Seasiders hitting the
crossbar and the visitors having two goals ruled out for offside.
Henry Lawrence returned from injury to make his first Wimbledon appearance
since early January from the start as they travelled to Cheltenham Town,
looking to end a run of 18 league games without a win. It looked like they
might manage that feat as they led for much of the match, but conceded
three times in the last nine minutes to lose 3-1.

There was better news for goalkeeper Jamie Cumming at the other end of the
table, though, as he produced a brilliant save to tip a header onto the
bar and record his sixth clean sheet since joining MK Dons in January, in
a 1-0 win at Cambridge United which leaves them just three points from
automatic promotion.
Emerson Palmieri helped Lyon finish the job in the Europa League, drawing
1-1 at home with Porto in the second leg of their last-16 tie, to give
them a 2-1 aggregate victory after their earlier win away in Portugal.
Lyon will now face Premier League side West Ham United in the quarters.
Ethan Ampadu was involved throughout a difficult week for Venezia in Serie
A. First they were beaten 1-0 away at Lazio, due to a soft penalty, before
two defensive mistakes when playing out from the back resulted in a 2-0
defeat at home to Sampdoria in a relegation head-to-head. That result
leaves the Lagunari three points from safety, albeit with a game in hand.

Michy Batshuayi was introduced as one of two first-half substitutions as
Besiktas reacted to going two goals behind in the Istanbul derby at
Galatasaray, but they could only manage a late consolation in a 2-1
defeat. The striker was back in the starting line-up for Besiktas' next
match and opened the scoring with his 12th goal of the season early on,
but it was only enough for a 1-1 draw at home with Hatayspor.
