Fu-Te Ni
Leyland is going to make a daily effort to communicate with Taiwanese
reliever Fu-Te Ni, a member of the 2008 Chinese Taipei Olympic team who knows
little English and communicates through an interpreter. He said managing
winter ball one year in Venezuela and struggling with communicating in
Spanish made him particularly sympathetic to players in the same position.

Reliever arrives from China
Reliever Fu-Te Ni arrived Friday. He signed to a minor-league contract with
the Tigers after pitching for Chinese Taipei in the 2008 Olympics. He is
invited to the major league camp but likely will pitch for Triple-A
Toledo.Through his interpreter, Ni said he has never pitched in the United
States and has only visited the country once before for training in Los
Angeles.
"I'm looking forward to this," he said, adding that his first meal in
Lakeland was at a Chinese restaurant not far from the ballpark.
