Kent taking fewer days off
全文:
OS ANGELES -- During the first half of the season, Jeff Kent likely would
have gotten Sunday's game against the Brewers off.
Kent and his aching back took off 20 of the first half's 95 games to keep him
fresh, with the veteran second baseman often sitting a day game after a night
game, especially when it could be combined with a Monday off-day to give him
two full days of rest.
That's much the same thinking behind giving Nomar Garciaparra the day off on
Sunday, with Angel Berroa getting the start at shortstop.
"We're trying to push the envelope with Jeff with the off-day [Monday], and
hopefully we get through it," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said.
Kent has started 27 of the 29 second-half games and has been given a full day
of rest only once after the All-Star break. He has hit .343 with two home
runs and 15 RBIs after the break entering Sunday.
Torre spoke with Kent about a month ago and they decided to "just go for it,"
which Torre said there's no question is influenced by the 40-year-old
possibly retiring at the end of the season.
"He came in with this. I certainly didn't tell him, 'This is what I need you
to do,' " Torre said. "We have to go according to how he feels, but he's
pretty much in a place right now mentally where he's planning on playing
every day, and if I happen to tell him the day before or give him a call and
tell him, 'Let's back off today,' he's been fine with that, but with the
off-day [Monday] we're sort of pushing it today."
