Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Carl Crawford is planning to
ask the Red Sox to allow him to have Tommy John elbow surgery next week.
It's a surprise in that Crawford is having his most productive month since
coming off the disabled list. Whether the Red Sox approve the decision
remains to be seen. If Crawford undergoes the procedure, it will cost him the
remainder of the 2012 season, and he could struggle to be medically cleared
by the start of spring training next February.
