Sporting win but late goals give Middlesbrough Cup hope

LONDON, March 10 (Reuters) -
Portugal's Sporting had to withstand a spirited revival from Middlesbrough to
record a 3-2 away win in their UEFA Cup second knockout round, first leg tie
on Thursday. Sporting, who will host the final at their Alvalade stadium in
Lisbon on May 18, were 3-0 up and cruising to victory before the injury-hit
Premier League side scored twice in the last 11 minutes to retain hope for the
return leg.
Boro, unbeaten at home in their first European season having chalked up wins
over Banik Ostrava, Lazio, Partizan Belgrade and Graz AK, looked set for a
heavy defeat after Sporting hit three without reply in 16 second-half minutes.
Following a drab opening half the game burst into life four minutes after the
restart when Pedro Barbosa finished clinically from Rudolph Douala's pass.
Brazilian Liedson, the top scorer in Portuguese Premier League, doubled the
lead four minutes later from another Douala cross.
Dutch midfielder Boudewijn Zenden blasted over on the hour before Sporting
netted again when Cameroonian Douala converted the easiest of chances from on
the goalline from Liedson's cross.
Boro midfielder Joseph Desire Job's acrobatic bicycle kick gave Boro a lifeline
and then four minutes from time Chris Riggott hammered in from just inside the
penalty area after keeper Ricardo had spilled a high ball.
