LISBON, March 17 (Reuters) -
Pedro Barbosa scored in the last minute to give Sporting Lisbon a 1-0 win over
Middlesbrough in the second leg of their UEFA Cup second knockout round tie on
Thursday and put them into the quarter-finals 4-2 on aggregate.
It is the first time in 14 years that the Portuguese side, who had already done
most of the damage in northeast England when they won the first leg 3-2, have
qualified for the last eight of a European club competition.
Sporting captain Barbosa hit a rising shot past diving goalkeeper Mark
Schwarzer after a run down the left and pull back by substitute Roudolphe
Douala.
"We knew what we had to do, keep the ball in our possession as much time as
possible. It wasn't an exhibition of much quality but it was a fair victory,"
said Barbosa, whose team are looking to reach the final in their Jose Alvalade
stadium.
"Middlesbrough looked like they were the team that was ahead and defending the
result, they didn't try to take control of the game. We were the only team that
tried to win," Sporting coach Jose Peseiro said.
Striker Joseph-Desire Job missed the best chance for the English Premier League
side five minutes into the second half when he turned a low cross from the
right by Szilard Nemeth just wide of the far post with goalkeeper Ricardo
beaten.
Schwarzer made a good reflex save when he turned striker Liedson's cheeky
deflection from Hugo Viana's free kick over the bar 11 minutes from time.
With three minutes to go Schwarzer dived to his right to tip away another free
kick by midfielder Viana.
Middlesbrough had the best chance of the first half when Nemeth shot from the
middle of the box with the goalkeeper out of position but central defender Rui
Jorge cleared off the line.
"Losing 3-2 at home, we knew this was going to be very difficult, not to
mention that we also had about seven players out that could have started today,
" Boro winger Boudewijn Zenden said.
"The young lads have done fantastic, we can't ask anything more," the Dutch
international said.
"In both legs we came up against opponents that played better football than we
did on the day."
