Sharapova battles past Hantuchova
Maria Sharapova was made to fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the
Australian Open despite a straight-sets victory over Daniela Hantuchova.
The Russian fourth seed won 6-4 6-4 but had to fight back after going 3-0 down
at the start of the second set.
Hantuchova's momentum was stalled when she was forced to take a three-minute
break for treatment to a thigh injury.
Sharapova won back a service break straight after the Slovak's return and
eased through the rest of the set.
Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbledon champion and Australian Open semi-finalist last
year, admitted that she had to concentrate when her opponent left the court
for treatment.
"I really had to keep my composure, stay cool and stay in control," said the
19-year-old right-hander.
She now faces fellow Russian Nadia Petrova in the last eight and admitted: "I
know it will be tough.
"She's a very strong server so I'm expecting another close game, but at the
moment I'm just happy to get through."
