文章: Fighting Hewitt One Win from No.1 Lleyton Hewitt has held the No.1 world ranking for 69 weeks. He knew coming into the Pacific Life Open as the defending champion that he needed to reach the semifinals or better to continue the streak. Anything less would see Andre Agassi, who withdrew from the tournament with a shoulder injury, become the oldest-ever No.1 in ATP history. (Hewitt has 500 points to defend this week; Agassi, who lost in the first round last year, had just five points to defend.) Hewitt needed to save three break points - the first by hitting the sideline with a backhand pass - against Younes El Aynaoui in the first round. Today, he needed to rally from a set and a break down to defeat Argentine Guillermo Coria 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-3 to win through to the quarterfinals, where he will play Robby Ginepri. Hewitt, who had never played Coria before today, said: "I think I could have opened the match up a lot easier if I got off [to a better start]. If I was able to break a bit earlier and win that first set, it could have been a convincing straight-sets win instead of a grind in three." "I think probably the turning factor was that I got a few more cheaper points off my first serve than he did. Especially in the third set, when it counted, on the big points in the third set, I was able to come up with big first serves. Sometimes he just rolled his first serve in to get the point started." Hewitt improved to 12-1 on the year, his only loss coming to El Aynaoui in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Hewitt won the most matches (23) at Tennis Masters Series level last year, winning Indian Wells and Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai. Making his first appearance at Indian Wells, Coria falls to 11-5 on the season after today's defeat. "Obviously when I was one set up, 2-1 in the second with a break, I thought I had a good chance to win," Coria said. "I can learn a lot of lessons from Lleyton." Australian Open finalist Rainer Schuettler was the first player to reach the quarterfinals when he tamed the Beast, Max Mirnyi, 6-3, 6-4. Schuettler improved to 16-6 on the year. Schuettler has now beaten Mirnyi four times in five career meetings and for the second time this year (Dubai, when Schuettler won and 18-point third-set tie-break). -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.217.124.213
