-on-khtk-on-monday-may-11th/
I’m just going to recap some of what I hear regarding the conversation.
(Note: There might not be a recap of the conversation on the website
immediately, so I would look every day or so. Nothing earth shattering or
anything like that.) There’s probably no new “news” items here, so in case
there’s not, I’m probably not going to post much here.
* There’s a plan to interview both Westphal and Jordan. This is despite that
Westphal’s current team, the Mavericks, is still in the playoffs
* There is only 2 names in the coaching search at the moment
* Petrie is going to Europe, primarily Spain and Italy, to watch Ricky Rubio,
Brandon Jennings and other prospects, later on in this week
* Petrie would ask all the things you would expect to ask: Their coaching
style and how it fits with the organization, their evaluation of the current
roster, how they would feel about the type of personnel that Petrie would
bring in, and other things of that realm
* Joe and Gavin Maloof are going to be part of the interview; Petrie didn’t
offically say it but George Maloof might be part of the process too (the
interviews are going to take place at the Palms in Las Vegas)
* A teacher as well as a coach is needed
* Petrie is re-iterating his preferences for a head coach–he says Eddie
Jordan and Paul Westphal qualify as such
* Playing young players is an important part of this deal
* The development of Caron Butler & Antawn Jamison, and the best years from
Gilbert Arenas are important to note in Jordan’s case; Westphal’s time as a
player which includes 2 NBA Finals, and one as a coach of a team that went to
the NBA Finals (1993 Suns) are important
* Petrie believes that you go after your candidate hard regardless of the
other teams looking for a head coach
* The Kings never had any contact with Rick Pitino (a confirmation of the
many reports)
* Petrie thinks the PF & PG positions are deep; not a lot of C’s in the
draft, and the Swingmen aren’t that deep
* Petrie believes the chance to get an impact player is high; He believes it’
s going to be tougher outside of the top 2 picks
* Petrie is going to look at the Best Player Available for every pick
* Petrie says that no one player is going to fill all of the needs of the
franchise
* The primary focus is about the draft and then at some point they’ll look
at free agency/trades; however it isn’t likely that they will play into free
agency this off-season, but it’s always possible–it definitely sounds like
2010 is a bigger focus
* The returning players need to come back with a sense of purpose that makes
this team better
Side Note: He commends the job Rick Adelman has done in Houston.

My analysis is simple. He wants Eddie Jordan. Paul Westphal is a guy who
attracts him, but isn’t the guy he wants. He wants to tell Jordan the job is
his. That’s why he’s scheduled 2 interviews before he leaves for Europe. He
outlined that both had success in prior jobs.
My personal opinion is that if you’re not going to take a swing at an
unproven coach with this roster, than Eddie Jordan is probably the best coach
the Kings could ask for. I could be wrong here, but Paul Westphal could
impress. Petrie will do his due diligence. I know that. It just seems that
with a short list, one is a long shot, and one is the odds on favorite for a
reason.
As far as the draft, you could tell that he was implying that he thinks it’s
Ricky Rubio and Blake Griffin (in some order) and after that it was risky. He
didn’t exactly say it, but you could hear him directly imply it by saying “
there’s a top two and after that it gets dicey”. He also mentions that the
PF and PG positions are deep, and as such, this could make it that the Kings
could go Rubio and 2 PF/C’s in the draft come June. In fact, it’s a
distinct possibility just because of those 2 likelihoods.
Nothing gained really, but “nothing ventured nothing gained” as they say.
Petrie wasn’t going to reveal certain information, but he certainly is
sowing the seeds for some jaw droppers namely Rubio. I think that’s why the
coaching search is happening in conjunction with him heading to Europe. He
wants to see how each coach might potentially feel about Rubio. Certainly, he
would also ask them their opinions on Blake Griffin and other prospects, but
a part of me gets the nagging feeling that he will likely make it clear that
Rubio is his preferred choice if given an option.
I could be wrong on all of this. Never forget, I’m a complete idiot.
