With the Hot Stove pretty quiet in regards to Santana, doesn't it seem like the club might be best off to sign the pitcher? If the Twins were to sign Santana to a six- or seven-year extension worth $20 million a year, by the end of the contract it likely would be the equivalent of a mid-level pitcher's contract due to heavy salary increases each year. Santana has never had any health concerns or discipline issues and is a great locker room presence. With those things in mind, why are the Twins so reluctant to give Santana a six-year, $120 million contract? -- Michael A., St. Paul, Minn. Many teams, not just the Twins, are hesitant to offer pitchers deals that are longer than four years. Some teams have been willing to make exceptions for elite pitchers, such as the Giants signing Barry Zito to a seven-year, $126 million contract last offseason. But just like Zito, who struggled this season, other pitchers have faltered in similar long-term deals. The Twins have done a good job of avoiding too many bad contracts, but pitcher Joe Mays' deal is an example of one that ended up costing the organization millions of dollars. Mays was given a four-year, $20 million contract just before the 2002 season. Despite his previous success, the deal turned out to be a bust. Mays was sidelined with elbow problems for parts of the '02 and '03 seasons before missing the entire 2004 season following Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery, and he never recovered to be the same pitcher when he returned. Santana's track record of success and lack of injuries may make a long-term deal seem more acceptable, but Mays also had been relatively injury free before his initial elbow injury in the first year of his deal. So although the Twins are not against paying Santana upwards of $20 million a season for four years, they certainly don't seem willing to extend him a deal longer than that -- in hopes of avoiding such a risk. If Santana remains healthy and becomes one of the best pitchers the game has ever seen, not signing him eventually might be deemed a bad move by the club. But the Twins don't appear willing to test Santana's durability over such a long period, and that's one of the reasons he likely will be moved before Spring Training. What are the odds of Joe Nathan being traded to the Cubs? I heard a rumor of a deal for the closer that would send outfielder Felix Pie and pitcher Carlos Marmol to Minnesota. If the Twins get these two for Nathan, wouldn't that make the Yankees' deal with Phil Hughes involved even better? -- Andy, Cincinnati Rumors of possible trades involving Nathan have started to surface, but so far it appears too soon to start talking specific deals. The Cubs have expressed interest in Nathan, yet the Twins have not been eager to shop their closer -- at least not so far. As I've said before, Nathan's future as a Twin likely will hinge on whether Santana is dealt. I have a hard time envisioning the club trading their All-Star closer if it still will have Santana as part of its rotation. If the Twins keep Santana until the trade deadline, there would be a benefit of having Nathan to see if the team can make one final push at a title. But if Minnesota starts planning for a rebuilding year in '08 by dealing its ace, then the team likely would move Nathan, too. That could mean trading Nathan in the offseason, but there always is the possibility the Twins could wait until the trade deadline knowing a team might be desperate at that time for a closer of his caliber.
