Hung-Wen Chen pitched six scoreless innings and Tony Thomas, who played solid
at second base for the entire series, had a solo homer as the Smokies
outlasted the Mobile BayBears 3-1 in the rubber game of their five-game
series at Hank Aaron Stadium Sunday night.
Chen (8-5) struck out five and allowed only five hits while not allowing a
walk. He kept Mobile batters off base with a wide array of pitches.
He also had strong help from the bullpen, with relievers Jake Muyco and Luke
Sommer allowing three hits over 2 1/3 innings, and David Cales picking up his
eighth save of the year as the Smokies ended the first half with a 42-27
record.
"Chen's been solid all season, and he's used his fastball, changeup, and
split-finger pitches very well," said Tennessee manager Bill Dancy. "He
really pounds the strike zone, and when you look at his record, he's been
outstanding. He's battled the opposing starters in is last three starts and
kept us in the games."
