Matsuzaka needed 72 pitches to get through the first three innings and trailed, 1-0. The Sox rattled off four singles against Maddux in the fourth, giving Matsuzaka a 2-1 lead. He was settling down. He got the Padres in order in the fourth, fanning two and needing nine pitches. Matsuzaka's last inning was the sixth. He surrendered a leadoff single to Khalil Greene, then fanned Russell Branyan for his eighth strikeout. After Kevin Kouzmanoff grounded out, the Padres sent Chase Headley up to hit for Maddux. Headley beat out a chopper up the middle, moving Greene to third. Marcus Giles struck out swinging at Matsuzaka's 126th and final pitch. He threw 130 pitches in a game at Oakland earlier this month. Maddux needed only 91 pitches in his six innings. As the Sox march toward the midpoint of the season, it's become clear Matsuzaka likes pitching on the road and he likes facing National League lineups. Going into last night, his ERA was 4.81 at Fenway and 3.48 on the road. No pitcher in major league baseball won 20 games last year, but not many throw as many pitches as Matsuzaka.
