The approach hardly is a secret. With its decision to trap guard Dwyane Wade
and rotate second defenders at center Shaquille O'Neal, Detroit has picked
its poison:
The jump shot of Heat power forward Udonis Haslem.
In Wednesday's 91-78 loss, a setback that trimmed the Heat's lead to 3-2 in
the best-of-7 Eastern Conference finals, Haslem shot 5 of 14.
Removing the combined 20 of 35 of O'Neal and Wade from the equation, and the
rest of the Heat players shot 14 of 42.
"We had good looks, myself included," Haslem said. "Just keep shooting the
ball. That's all we've got to do is keep shooting the ball, and we'll be all
right."
The Haslem barometer is not always telling. For example, he shot 0 for 7 in
the 91-86 series-opening victory. But in the two losses, the struggles have
been pronounced, with 6-of-19 inaccuracy.
Coach Pat Riley said faith remains.
"I thought [Wednesday] night he was a little bit indecisive," he said. "He
was shot-faking the air, putting the ball on the floor. He's a strong-minded
person and takes things like that personally and will bounce back."
