Q: On a night where obviously you got a ton of contributions from a ton of guys,
can you just kind of summarize the jobs that Ben and TJ did for you guys coming
off the bench?

Carlisle: Yeah, I mean, those guys were tremendous. TJ just brought a will, a co
mpetitive will to the game. Mathurin jumped in there and immediately was aggress

and got the ball in the basket. Look, this is the kind of team that we are. We
need everybody to be ready. It’s not always going to be exactly the same guys s
tepping up with scoring and stuff like that, but this is how we got to do it. We
got to do it as a team, and we got to make it as hard as possible on them.

Carlisle: Yeah, terrific. I mean, every game you’re going to have to make adjus
tments against this defense. There are just going to be different looks. You’re
going to have different high-level defenders on you. You’re going to see some
different coverages. It’s going to be constantly changing. I thought his approa
ch tonight was exactly what it needed to be — a combination of spatial awarenes
s and aggression, and a real good feel for when to score and when to get his tea
mmates involved at the right times. He was terrific.

Pascal was terrific. He scored the first six points of the game when points were
hard to come by, and he did it on three difficult one-on-one fadeaway shots. Th
ose are tough shots. I was just proud of the way we bounced back from a rough en
ding to the third quarter. That was something that could have shaken us up a lot
, but the guys who went back in to start the fourth just kept their head down an
d kept competing.

plays against Chet. How do you keep all your guys mentally ready for this moment
?

Carlisle: Well, Myles is under the weather. He may not even be with us tomorrow.
He just hasn’t been feeling well the last couple of days. It was affecting his
wind. He won’t bring it up, but I think it’s appropriate to mention that he i
s working through something — some kind of cold or whatever — but he’s just n
ot feeling himself.

coming back in there ready. That’s what a lot of this is — you have to be sup
er resilient. Things happen in milliseconds. These guys go by you, they’re dunk
ing the ball, doing this and that. There’s a lot going on.

Does it ever surprise you when he’s still able to almost trick teams into that
steal? And historically, does it remind you of anyone else?

it be part of our thing. He’s a guy that inspires a lot of people. He inspires
our team a lot.

e have to look at the fouls — maybe there are some that are avoidable. But look

have to keep platooning people onto him and try to keep our guys fresh somehow.

w the spark that TJ brought today? How do you work on this with your players?

hrough the media that we really need them. They were great, especially in the fo
urth quarter. It just went up a few decibels. It’s one of many factors, as you
mentioned.

alk to him, kind of keep him engaged? And what has he meant for you guys in the
playoffs this time around?

Carlisle: Yeah, he was with the team, just not playing. He took a lot of mental
notes. He may have written some things down, but I know that after he sustained
the injury — it was either in February or early March — you can order these ca
lendars that start on a specific day and count down. I think Dr. ElAttrache did
the surgery, and there was a calendar sitting in our training room. Every day he
would come in and tear one off. He was counting down the days to being cleared
sometime in August, then beginning five-on-five with our guys in September, and
training camp — with his eyes firmly set on an opportunity in the playoffs.
卡萊爾： 有，他去年雖然沒上場，但一直和球隊待在一起。他腦袋裡記了很多筆記，也許
還有寫下來。我記得他受傷後是二月或三月，那時他買了一本從特定日期開始倒數的日曆，

He’s put in a lot of work to be ready for these moments. Tonight, he was an abs
olute major factor.

Q: Rick, you mentioned earlier that this is who we’ve got to be. This is our te
am. Over the last couple of years, as this team came into its own, when did the
players really start to buy into the identity they showed in the fourth quarter
tonight?

Carlisle: We have great guys on our team. Things that make sense aren’t a hard
sell for our guys. We’ve put an incredible amount of work into becoming better
defensively. We’re still not great, but we’re way better than we were. It’s t
aken tons of work and constant relationship building. It’s a difficult system,
and it requires a lot of sacrifice.
卡萊爾： 我們球隊有一群很棒的球員。對我們來說，只要是有道理的東西，就不難推動。

But when you execute it the right way — whether it’s a game two years ago in m
id-January or Game 3 of the Finals — these guys see where important things are
important and hard things are hard. That’s a phrase I’ve used many times: hard
things are hard. But our guys have made the investment, and it’s an ongoing th
ing. It’s like a great marriage — it’s a lot of work.
