After three straight seasons of postseason basketball, the Sacramento Kings
have fallen back to the bottom of the Western Conference. Once again, it's
time for a rebuild for the Kings. At least it's coming off a period of
semi-success this time around. No matter how they got here, the reality is
that rebuilding is the way forward for Sacramento…assuming they'll commit to
it.

The Kings can't get caught in a series of quick-fix attempts. They've tried
that before and it's never really worked. This time around, Sacramento needs
to build sensibly. If that means letting veterans walk, while letting young
players pile up losses, so be it. That's better than playing (and paying!) a
bunch of veterans to…well…pile up losses.To start things off, this team is
far too expensive for what they are results-wise. The Kings project to hit
the summer dancing around the first apron. Being over the tax is too much for
this group, never mind pushing past the first apron. Cleaning up the cap
sheet has to be a primary goal of the offseason.

Zach LaVine is likely to opt in. LaVine won't get offers that approach the
$48.9 million player option he holds for next season. The veteran shooting
guard also isn't quite to the point where he should be focused on years over
dollars either. Picking up that sizable option for next season, then seeing
where things are at a year from now is the sensible path for LaVine.
Unfortunately, that's not the best path for the Kings, but it is what it is.
If nothing else, LaVine will provide some scoring as a sizable expiring
contract that could be used in a trade.

With DeMar DeRozan and the $25.7 million that he's owed, Sacramento has some
measure of control. The Kings can waive DeRozan and would be on the hook for
just $10 million. Doing so would bring Sacramento under the first apron, and
within striking distance of getting out of the tax entirely.
Given that the team should be rebuilding, and DeRozan has no place on a
rebuilding team, waiving the veteran wing should be the way this goes.
DeRozan's deal doesn't fully guarantee until January. That means Sacramento
could also look to find a trade, which would remove the full salary from the
books, without leaving behind the $10 million in dead money. But if a trade
can't be found, then the Kings should waive the veteran and let him catch on
with a contender.

As for the rest of the roster, Scott Perry and the Sacramento front office
should be working to find deals for Domantas Sabonis, Malik Monk, and
De'Andre Hunter, in that order. Sabonis has been terrific for the Kings, but
he makes over $94 million fully guaranteed through 2027-28. Sabonis isn't
good enough to drag the Kings to playoffs by himself, nor is he a great
plug-and-play five, because he's a center who doesn't protect the rim. The
Kings don't need to give Sabonis away, but the main goal in moving him would
be to get off his contract, not necessarily maximizing their return in a
trade.

Monk's deal is more of a fair value for a bench scoring guard. If a playoff
contender finds themselves short on second unit playmakers, they might have
interest in picking up Monk. Again, Sacramento doesn't need to win the trade
here. Just get off the contract while picking up something that could be
helpful down the line.

Hunter comes with more flexibility. Sacramento added him at the trade for
reasons that are still unclear. He overlaps with Keegan Murray as far as
positions go. Neither is a knockdown enough of a shooter that they can play
together, and neither is a rim protector. That means this pairing as the
starting forward duo alongside Sabonis won't work. The good news? Hunter only
has one year left on his contract entering next season. That means moving him
shouldn't be too difficult. Given Hunter's past as a productive rotation
player on good teams, Sacramento shouldn't have to pay to get off his deal
either. If the Kings can't move Hunter, they can keep him and let his deal
have value as an expiring contract through the 2027 trade deadline.

Of the players coming back, the rest are on reasonable contracts and/or
potential core pieces. Keegan Murray's new deal will kick in, and it looks
like an overpay right now. But if Murray can get (and stay!) healthy, he
should provide value on his extension. If the Kings move on from some others,
Murray will be given every chance to do more in a bigger role. Maxime
Raynaud, Nique Clifford and Dylan Cardwell are all keepers out of the team's
young group. All have shown a lot as rookies and should be at least rotation
players moving forward.

It's admitting defeat, but Sacramento should decline Devin Carter's
fourth-year rookie scale team option. Next year's salary is already locked
in. Nothing can be done about that. But Carter simply isn't good enough for
the Kings to carry $7.4 million on the books in 2027-28. He's another trade
candidates, and not having that extra year of salary will likely help his
trade value.

Of the free agent group, maybe Killian Hayes could be brought back, if the
team's tax issues clear up enough to fit him under the tax line. Precious
Achiuwa, Drew Eubanks, Doug McDermott and Russell Westbrook have no place on
a rebuilding team. All four should not be back and replaced with younger,
developmental options.

That leaves the enormously important 2026 NBA Draft. This is where Sacramento
has to get it correct. If they land in the top three, any one of A.J.
Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson or Cam Boozer could be the pick. Peterson probably
makes the most sense, given Sacramento is thin with guard prospects. But
Dybantsa and Boozer would be fine, as their potential is more than enough to
outweigh any potential positional fit issues.If Sacramento is outside of the
top three, they can still land Caleb Wilson, Darius Acuff Jr., Kingston
Flemings, Keaton Wagler or Mikel Brown, that would work too. Wilson is a true
four, with the other four being potential lead playmakers.

The opportunity is there for Sacramento to add a big-time talent to a core
that is being rebuilt around Murray, Raynaud, Clifford and Cardwell. That
group, plus a high-end rookie, and a cleaned-up cap sheet should be the goal.
This offseason gives the Sacramento Kings the chance to fully rebuild.
They've now missed the postseason, so there's no reason to hang onto the idea
of recapturing former glory for this group. A full reset is the only path
that makes sense. It might take a couple of years to get things moving back
in the right direction, but it has to happen. And it's not like Kings fans
don't have experience waiting for things to get good again. No fanbase in the
league has been more loyal during decades of rebuilding than the one in
Sacramento. The Kings leadership has to give them something to put in hope
again. That process starts this summer.
