He’s a terrific two-way threat who can pressure the defense from all three levels as a scorer, thanks to his jumper and footwork. Defensively, he’s a hard-nosed, on-ball player who stays engaged off the ball and makes action plays happen with disruptive hands. He strikes me more as an elite complementary player than one who will turn into a star. I think he can average 20 points while playing high-level defense, but for him to turn into an All-Star, we’d need to see growth as a passer and playmaker, as well as development with how he separates from his opposition. He’d probably be successful at a place like Charlotte within Charles Lee’s offense. Goes in straight lines toward the rim as a driver and with his gathers. Very physical driver who beats the opposition down the court with the ball. Takes bumps well and looks to initiate contact. The numbers are quite good here. Hit 40.3 percent of his pull-up 3-point attempts at Arizona and 37 percent of his pull-up 3s on the AAU circuit. Plays so well off of two feet that he’s almost always on balance and ready to fire, meaning defenders have to be honest with all of his moves off the bounce. It opens opportunities for him to get pull-up shots off hesitations or one-dribble relocations, both of which are areas where he projects to be useful. Likes to hit the hesitation and hang dribbles into pull-ups. Drilled 44.2 percent of his pull-up midrange shots this season, per Synergy, and has consistently taken shots from that area. What stands out is Burries’ ability to play off two feet, stay on the ground and make defenders commit before he does. His footwork is outstanding. His moves aren’t spectacular, but he’s efficient and economical with his motions. Excellent with his gathers around the rim, possessing ample amounts of deceleration to pair with Euro steps. Took about one per game this season at Arizona and made them at a 45 percent clip, a good number for a freshman. Even when he doesn’t beat defenders off the bounce or gets only a slight angle, he has this ability to plant comfortably off one foot and get into a little floater or push shot. Has awesome balance off one foot. Can rip into a Euro step and get into the floater, too. Good balance out of explosive moves. Has some impressive finishes in his package, although there are also some rough reps we’ll talk about in the next section. Can easily get to inside-hand finishes and is sharp at reverse layups while using the basket to shield him from defenders. I like his ability to take bumps and maintain his balance and touch through contact. His crafty footwork and willingness to play through contact help him. Seems to read the ball off the rim well. Doesn’t get particularly high off the ground but almost always seems to be in the right place at the right time to either end a defensive possession and start the break or to crash in with the right timing and create an extra possession. He’s willing to fight on the ball. Good defensive stance. Has a high motor and plays hard on that end. Uses his chest and frame well at the point of attack to stop penetration. Holds his line well when someone tries to go through his chest. He battles through screens. Will jump passing lanes and even sometimes play cat-and-mouse with ballhandlers to confuse them and create potential deflections or steals. Very disruptive hands despite not being overly long. Averaged 1.5 steals at Arizona and is a solid defensive playmaker. Hand-eye coordination seems to be quite good. His off-ball defensive mentality is locked in. Doesn’t take plays off. He shouldn’t get dominated in switches despite not being overly big or long. His 8-foot-2.5 standing reach is not massive for an off-guard. Burries has moments of explosiveness but by and large doesn’t have a ton of pop. Doesn’t have a quick first step or an elite vertical leap. Don’ t think he’s quite capable at this stage of being a point guard for an NBA team. I wonder if he has some role flexibility as an on-/off-ball scorer, but he might not give positional flexibility to get the most out of your ball movement and decision-making. This could be situationally dependent on the team that drafts him. Has not yet proved he sees many high-level, advanced reads. Not a selfish player and will look for his teammates. But he hasn’t shown a lot yet in terms of vision or seeing the court at a high level on his drives. Very much a scoring-minded player. Had a negative assist-to-turnover ratio with 58 assists versus 59 turnovers in AAU play. The turnovers tend to come when he gets too deep in the paint and tries to use his footwork and Euro steps to maneuver around and gets caught after picking up the ball. Becoming a better passer and playmaker while limiting turnovers will be massive areas of growth for Burries. Has moments when he throws some wild ones up at the rim. Tends to be very right-hand dominant at the rim when in a crowd. Though he’s been a solid finisher at the rim, I worry about him being successful at this in the NBA when he has to live below the rim against even more size and length. Tends to be best with a ball screen as opposed to in isolation, as he doesn’t get past his man that often. That lack of first step is an issue here. Will need to change speeds even better, although increased space at the NBA level might help.
