Cade Cunningham’s triple-double lights up MSG as Pistons down Knicks

NEW YORK — The moment Cade Cunningham knew he had it going against the New
York Knicks might have come later than expected by those watching him pick
apart the home team. He was on his way to being the first Detroit Pistons
player to have a triple-double in the current Madison Square Garden, which
opened in 1968.
With 15.5 seconds remaining in the first half, Cunningham came off an Isaiah
Stewart screen and saw New York center Ariel Hukporti in drop coverage.
Cunningham took one dribble and buried a pull-up 3-pointer. By the time the
ball was through the net, Cunningham was up to 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting
from 3, eight assists, five rebounds and no turnovers. He was well into his
rhythm by then.
Cunningham’s final triple of the half capped off a second quarter in which
he went a perfect 4 of 4 from behind the arc and 5 of 6 overall for 16 of his
29 points. His only bucket inside the 3-point line in the second came on a
layup over the outstretched arms of Hukporti and OG Anunoby.

Although Cunningham had just eight second-half points and did a majority of
his work in the first 24 minutes of action, his fingerprints were all over
the 120-111 win. He finished with 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting and 5 of 8
from long range, a career-high 15 assists and 10 rebounds. It was the Pistons
’ first time beating the Knicks since Nov. 6, 2019.
Cunningham is amid the best stretch of his professional career, furthering a
case for his first All-Star bid and making franchise history in the process.
“I believe I am,” Cunningham said at his locker when asked if he thought
was an All-Star. “Whenever I’m on the court every night, I feel like I’m
the best player. I try to do whatever it takes to help my team win, and my
teammates have made me look great this year. I’m just trying to help my team
win and we’ll see what happens with it.”
Cunningham also was sure to credit his teammates. The bond he shares with
them is apparent. Despite Cunningham having one of the best games of his
young career, he was just another guy in the locker room after the win.
Pistons players enjoyed pizza over music provided by Jalen Duren.
It was much less about Cunningham in the confines of the Detroit locker room
and more about the road win over a top-five team in the Eastern Conference to
move to 10-15.
Cunningham entered the season with two triple-doubles and through the first
25 games this season, he already has five triple-doubles.
Before Saturday’s performance, his 23.7 points on 45.2 percent from the
field and 37.8 percent from 3-point range, 9.1 assists and 7.2 rebounds were
well on pace to be career bests. In his last 10 games, Cunningham is posting
24.5 points on 40.8 percent from 3, 10.0 assists and 7.1 rebounds.
Aside from back-to-back career highs in assists, his five triple-doubles are
the third most in a season in franchise history (Grant Hill had 13 and 10)
and the third most in the NBA this season behind former MVPs Nikola Joki
and LeBron James.

To put Cunningham’s level of play in perspective, Indiana Pacers guard
Tyrese Haliburton, who started in the 2024 All-Star Game, averaged 20.1
points on 47.7 percent shooting and 36.4 percent from distance, 10.9 assists
and 3.9 rebounds last season. Damian Lillard was the other starter in the
East backcourt. Lillard averaged 24.3 points on 35.4 percent shooting from 3,
7.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds.
Cunningham’s numbers are on par with both of the guards who started in the
East last season and his numbers are producing wins, too. While Detroit’s
record might not jump off the page, the Pistons were only 2-23 through their
first 25 last season. This is the best start Cunningham has seen through 25
games in his four NBA seasons, and it’s the best start Detroit has had
through 25 games since 2019-20.
“(Cade) set the tone for the game,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said
postgame. “Defensively we asked him to guard (Jalen) Brunson. I thought he
did a really good job of keeping him in front of him and containing him. He
played a complete game tonight and I was proud of his effort, but to see the
growth from game to game and the things we talked about in Boston.
“And to be able to carry it over to tonight, I thought, was really good.”
The 23-year-old guard is also maximizing the potential of those around him.
Malik Beasley is on pace to average the second-most points of his career on
39.9 percent from behind the arc. Cunningham’s backcourt mate, Jaden Ivey,
is on pace for career-highs in points, field-goal percentage and 3-point
percentage.
“He’s definitely up there with some of the best guards and players,”
Beasley said of Cunningham in comparison to other players he’s played with.
“For him to get these assists – 15? It’s easy for him. I don’t think he’
s ever had this much space before.”
Beasley, Tobias Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Simone Fontecchio do offer
Cunningham more space than he’s had in his career.
In particular, Beasley has been a huge asset for Cunningham. In Detroit’s
loss to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, Beasley moved to 100th on the NBA’s
all-time 3-pointers made list. He’s second in the league with 92 total made
3s this season, the most by any player through 25 games in franchise history.
Against Boston, Cunningham was only a rebound short of another triple-double.
But he wasn’t too impressed with his 27-point, 14-assist, nine-rebound
outing.
“To be honest, I didn’t really feel like I got in the zone like I wanted to
tonight,” Cunningham told The Athletic from his TD Garden locker after a
130-120 loss to the Celtics.
Heading into the locker room Saturday, that question was front of mind
considering how he had just played. This time, Cunningham had a different
answer.
“It felt a little different,” Cunningham said. “The 3-ball was falling,
too. I felt like I could make whatever reads, I was making all of the reads
on time and on target. I definitely felt like I was in that zone, for sure.”

It remains to be seen how long Cunningham can sustain these performances and
how far it’ll take the Pistons, but he is showing signs that he’s just
beginning to scratch the surface of the player he can become.
