Kim to miss Open By LEO SCHLINK December 9, 2004 THERE will be no awkward Kim Clijsters moments for Lleyton Hewitt at next month 's centenary Australian Open after the Belgian former world No.1 opted not to e nter the event. Clijsters' season has been devastated by a chronic wrist injury and she has joi ned former Australian Jelena Dokic in missing the January 17-30 championship. Clijsters and Hewitt broke off their engagement in October. The high-profile pa ir would have contested events in Sydney and Melbourne had Clijsters been fit. Dokic has not played the Australian Open since 2001, when she lost in round one and her father accused officials of rigging the draw. She renounced her Australian citizenship soon after. Dokic would have needed a wild card to enter the 2005 Open as her world ranking has slumped from 15th last season to 127th. Apart from Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten (hip), almost all the other top players wil l compete at Melbourne Park. Three Australian women will enter the event on world-rankings -- No.13 Alicia M olik, Sam Stosur and Nicole Pratt -- while Evie Dominikovic has a wild card for strong displays on the Uncle Toby's Futures circuit. Three Australian men also earn entry on world rankings -- No.3 Lleyton Hewitt, Scott Draper and Wayne Arthurs. Unless players drop out, Mark Philippoussis, now world-ranked 109, will have to compete as a wild-card entrant. Clijsters had hinted on Monday she would not venture to Australia this summer. "My wrist still calls for a lot of attention and care and I can use my time to spend it well," she said. "But in two weeks time, I need to see the doctors again and only then will I fi nd out about the real progress." Clijsters was able to contest only one major this year -- the Australian Open, where she reached the final.
