Henin-Hardenne loses exhibition in first match since September
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) --
Former No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne returned to action for the first time since
September, losing an exhibition match to Nathalie Dechy 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday.
Henin-Hardenne's appearance at the Women's Tennis Trophy tournament in the
southern city of Charleroi marked the start of her preparations for defending
the Australian Open title.
The Belgian, who dropped to eighth in the WTA rankings this year, had not
played since losing in the fourth round of the U.S. Open. She was sidelined
by an energy-sapping virus that weakened her since April and continued to
affect her strength.
``Believe me, I've been down. With doubts -- lots of doubts,'' Henin-Hardenne
said.
Despite her medical problems, she won five of the nine official tournaments she
entered in a year capped with an Olympic gold medal.
``Looking back, it wasn't all that bad,'' she said.
She was first forced to rest after being diagnosed with the blood disorder in
April. She came back in June to try to defend her French Open title but lost in
the second round and left the circuit again.
She will play the Medibank International Tournament in Sydney starting Jan. 10
before traveling to Melbourne for the year's opening Grand Slam tournament.
