Chamberlain Prefers to Be a Pitcher, Period

CHICAGO — When reporters asked Joba Chamberlain on Tuesday if he preferred to
be a starter or a reliever, Chamberlain answered: “A pitcher. I honestly
don’t care.” If that is true, he may be the only one.

Chamberlain is a reliever, but the Yankees’ front office — especially the co-
chairman Hank Steinbrenner — expects him to be a starter in the future.

The Yankees do not want Chamberlain to exceed 140 innings or so this season,

Opening the year as a reliever limits his innings and leaves open the option of

Thursday, after the birth of his second daughter on Monday night in Miami.
Rodriguez did not release the name of the baby, who was 7 pounds 2 ounces.
