They grabbed two first-half goals to boost their chances of booking a place in the last 16. The first-leg win was clinched through a penalty from Timmy Simons and a strike from Danko Lazovic. Helsingborgs IF host the return leg next week Thursday. PSV put in a decent display and after they had taken a two goal cushion, they were more anxious to keep a clean sheet than score a third goal. Helsingborgs IF produced some goal threat in the first half, but also conceded space at the back. The home side did not take any risks and were content with a 2-0 victory. Assistant coach Dwight Lodeweges, who took charge in the absence of head coach Sef Vergoossen, made one change to the team that drew 1-1 with sc Heerenveen last time out, keeping Jefferson Farfan on the bench and giving a start to Mike Zonneveld. PSV created their first danger after five minutes, when Afellay and Dzsudzsak had shots on target and they opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Lazovic broke free and rounded goalkeeper Andersson who tripped the Serbian striker. The referee pointed at the spot, cautioned the Swedish stopper and captain Simons calmly converted the penalty: 1-0. The visitors attempted to hit back straight on and their striker Omotoyossi got two chances, but was thwarted by PSV keeper Gomes. PSV dominated proceedings in midfield and patiently played their passing game, trying to find an opening in the visitors’ compact defence. Afellay came close to doubling PSV’s advantage, but first he fired into the side netting from a sharp angle and then he hit the post. PSV extended their lead in the 33rd minute after all. Afellay unleashed a powerful shot on target that Andersson failed to hold and Lazovic pounced on the rebound, blasting home from close range; 2-0. PSV were well balanced with Zonneveld operating as extra holding midfielder, but lacked cutting edge, with Farfan dropping to the bench. The hosts enjoyed most possession of the ball and Afellay, Bakkal and Dzsudzsak were working tirelessly and started many moves. Lazovic got a chance straight after the restart, but was denied by a defender, while Gomes pulled off a fine save at the other end. PSV were in control, but hardly threatened during the second half. Rajkovic was brought on to replace Alcides twenty minutes from time and Koevermans left the bench to take over from Lazovic. Helsingborgs IF moved men forward in a bid to score a vital way goal, but the PSV defence comfortably held out in the closing stages to record a fine 2-0 win.
