Match : PSV - AS Monaco Date : 17 - 09 - 2003 Time : 20.45 (CET) Referee : Bennett Stadium : Philips Stadion Location : Eindhoven PSV start their 2003-2004 UEFA Champions League tournament at home in the Philips Stadium against AS Monaco, who were second in the French table last season. PSV versus French clubs PSV have never met AS Monaco yet in an official game. The Eindhoven team met French clubs on sixteen occasions. PSV succeeded in winning only three of those games; eight times the final result was a draw and French clubs gained a victory five times. PSV netted 10 goals and had to concede 14 goals. For the most memorable result ever achieved by PSV against a French club we undoubtedly have to go back to 1978. In the UEFA Cup final in which two legs against SC Bastia were played, PSV were the better side. Away the Eind- hoven team had to settle for a goalless 0-0 draw, but at home, in Eindhoven on 9 May 1978 PSV gained a glorious 3-0 win. Achievements in the UEFA Champions League AS Monaco participate for the fourth time in the UEFA Champions League tournament. Up till now the club has reached the semi-finals twice, in 1994 and in 1998. The last time that AS Monaco competed in the Champions League was in the 2000-2001 season, when the club was last in their group, having collected only three points less than group winner SK Sturm Graz. As a player, the present trainer coach Didier Deschamps was successful in the tournament. He was one of the first players who, with his club Olympique Marseille, managed to win the Champions League in its present form in 1993. AC Milan were beaten in the final that took place in Munich. In 1996 Deschamps won the UEFA Cham- pions League again; and this time he was in the service of Juventus. In 1997 and 1998 he again made an appearance in UEFA Champions League finals, but he suffered a defeat in both games. PSV will take part in the prestigious tournament for the eighth time. Up till now PSV have played 42 games, of which they won eleven. Ten games ended in a draw and PSV lost 21 games. AS Monaco started only 23 games, but they succeeded in winning 10 of them. Monaco drew 5 times and lost 8 out of those 23 games. Referee Stephen Graham Bennett The man in charge is the English referee Stephen Graham Bennett. Forty- two year old Bennett was the referee during the friendly international between Norway and Portugal in Oslo only seven days ago (0-1). He will be assisted by Mr. Anthony Gree and Mr. Kevin Pike, who are both also English.
