Sacramento, Calif. - Nuggets assistant coach Adrian Dantley knows the
difficulty of leading the NBA in scoring, having done it twice in his
illustrious career. With that in mind, A.D. believes it is "ridiculous" that
Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony could be the first leading scorer never to
play in a NBA All-Star Game.
The Western Conference coaches snubbed Anthony in voting for the West
all-star reserves Thursday. Anthony could be added as a replacement player by
NBA commissioner David Stern for injured Houston center Yao Ming or possibly
injured Utah forward Carlos Boozer, but there is no timetable. Dantley
believes Anthony's 15-game suspension for fighting at New York on Dec. 16
"was held against him."
"The guy is having a heck of a year," Dantley said before Denver's game at
Sacramento on Saturday night. "He should be on it. His team is above .500.
Plus, he is one of the top players in the league. As I said to someone else
the other day, 'How are you going to be third-team all-NBA last (season) and
have a better year and you don't make the all-star team?'
"It's ridiculous. Either the coaches don't like him or it's because of the
fight because this has happened two years in a row."
When told of the six-time NBA all-star's comments, Anthony said: "He's been
through a lot in his career, also being the leading scorer (twice). He knows
that it sometimes gets lonely at the top."
Injury report
Nuggets guard Allen Iverson, who is averaging 28.9 points, missed his third
straight game because of a right ankle injury. The Western Conference
all-star received treatment on his right ankle from assistant trainer Derrick
Fitts in Denver on Saturday and is a game-time decision for Monday's game
against Phoenix.
Iverson is far from the only Nugget hurt. Anthony has a sprained and bloodied
middle finger on his right hand that he badly injured against Portland last
Friday. Center Marcus Camby has a left groin strain suffered in the fourth
quarter Saturday and is listed as day to day. Forward Reggie Evans sprained
his right ankle in the first half and is day to day. And guard Steve Blake
received 12 stitches in his upper lip in the first half and has a sprained
right elbow. Several Nuggets are expected to come to the Pepsi Center in the
early afternoon for treatment today.
"We are snake-bit," Anthony said.
