Orioles Team Report
RHP Kris Benson has a partially torn rotator cuff and will likely miss the
entire season.
The veteran has had two medical opinions -- both of which confirmed the tear --
and is going for a third before he decides whether or not to opt for surgery.
If he chooses to have the operation, which seems likely, it will carry a
rehabilitation period of 8-to-12 months. If he doesn't, he'll engage in
strengthening exercises that may or may not fix the problem..
Baltimore went out and signed veteran RHP Steve Trachsel to fill the void
left by Benson's injury. Trachsel has spent most of his career in the
National League, but he's an experienced innings-eater that should help
support the team's young staff.
SCOUTING REPORT
1B/DH Kevin Millar is a patient hitter with middling pull power. Virtually all
of Millar's home runs and doubles go to left field, but he sprayed singles all
around the park last year. Millar doesn't run well and is an average defender
at first base. The righthanded hitter is one of the few Orioles who will take a
walk, and he also keeps his strikeouts relatively in check. At 35, Millar is
nearing the end of his run as a starting-caliber player.
