Orioles Team Report
Backup C Paul Bako was held out of the early games with a sore right oblique
muscle, an ailment that has opened up playing time for darkhorse candidates
J.R. House and Adam Donachie. Donachie, a Rule 5 pick, has started a few
games and impressed the team's decision-makers with his defensive ability.
Bako is expected back soon, but his absence may have already made an impact.
The Orioles have been moving Aubrey Huff, Kevin Millar and Jay Gibbons around
the diamond, letting each player start at both first base and left field.
That project will continue into the season, and the least accomplished
defender will see a lot of time at designated hitter.
MAKING HIS CASE:
House has played the outfield and first base in addition to catcher this
spring. The former college quarterback is trying to show that he's versatile
enough to help in more than one spot. House would be a valuable addition
against left-handed pitchers, but his defense behind the plate has never been
stellar. Baltimore doesn't need a third catcher as much as last year -- when
Javy Lopez was the backup and the DH -- but House will get a long look.
