The Pacers have attempted 563 3-point shots while their opponents have attempted 399. Indiana ranks 10th of 15 Eastern Conference teams in 3-point percentage. It seems like the 3-point shot is not a viable strategy for this team to win ballgames. Is the large number of 3-pointers the result of broken plays turning into shooting against the shot clock, or by offensive design? (From Keith in Long Beach, Calif.) Of the statistical indicators of team performance, few have been more telling than 3-point percentage. In the last 11 victories, the Pacers have shot 44.7 percent from the arc. In the last 10 losses, they've shot 24.6 percent. It's clear, then, that the 3-point shot has been a very important part of the offensive attack. But it hasn't been a matter of how many they're taking, it's the circumstances that lead to the shot. The idea is to work the post, either with Jermaine O'Neal or, as has developed lately, Stephen Jackson. Assuming the defense is forced to collapse inside, something will be open outside. If the ball is rotated crisply, somebody should wind up with an open shot, often from the 3-point line. Primarily, but not exclusively, because everything to this point has been little more than rumor or speculation. The reports are all couched with phrases like "have discussed" or "could consider" or "might be willing to." To this point, there has not been a rock-solid report from a credible media source reporting that a specific deal has been agreed upon. In fact, we check them out thoroughly. The first step is to determine viability. You'd be surprised how many trade rumors make it into print involving packages that simply can't work because of Salary Cap restrictions. Without question, Jackson's increased productivity in the past few weeks has been vital to keeping the Pacers afloat, particularly during O'Neal's bout with pneumonia. Jackson has averaged 22.3 points in the last seven games, a substantial increase from his 13.9 mark in the first 26. His play has been one of the many indicators of team performance. He has averaged 16.3 points and 46.8 percent shooting in wins, against 14.2 points and 38.5 percent shooting in losses. Interestingly, O'Neal has scored more in losses (23.2) than victories (20.7). When O'Neal is healthy, the offense runs through him. He is the focal point of the system and that isn't going to change. Jackson, however, can have a profound impact on the team as the second option, particularly when he plays as he has of late. Jackson did a great deal of his damage inside, either on post moves or penetration. As a result, he has averaged 7.7 free-throw attempts in the last seven games, nearly triple his 2.7 average of the first 26.
