America West Arena will be alive with the sound of Thunder this
postseason. Suns legend Dan Majerle announced today that he is
temporarily giving up his retired life of luxury to put on the Phoenix
purple and orange for one last playoff run.
"I'm still in great shape, believe it or not," the 39-year-old Ring
of Honor member said. "I stink at golf, am totally incompetent when it
comes to helping around the house, but I can still drain the long ball
consistently. Especially with this team's three-point shooting frequency,
it made a lot of sense to come back and try to help the Suns win a
championship."
The Suns drafted the Central Michigan product with the 14th overall
pick in the 1988 NBA Draft and he spent the first seven seasons of his
career in the Valley before being traded to Cleveland in the summer of
1995. The Michigan native then returned to the Suns in 2001 to finish
off a 12-year career that saw him go to three All-Star Games and the
1993 NBA Finals.
Retiring as the all-time Suns leader in three-pointers made and holding
the club record with eight super shots in one game, Majerle is one of the
team's most popular players of all time. Current Suns swingman Quentin
Richardson broke the single-game record with nine long balls earlier this
season and set new club marks for three-pointers made in a season in
Wednesday night's win over Philadelphia.
"Yeah, I just heard he's coming back," Richardson smiled. "I wish him
all the luck in the world and hope he can add something to our bench."
Majerle returned to the court during All-Star Weekend in February to
participate in the Shooting Stars contest with Suns forward Shawn Marion
and Mercury guard Diana Taurasi. "Thunder Dan" drained a half-court shot
to set a new record in the event, which got his juices flowing for the
thrill of competition again.
"I knew when I shot around with my teammates and competitors at the
Pepsi Center for a half hour and didn't keel over that I could still
contribute," he laughed. "I just need a few touches and the ball in my
hands when the game is on the line."
To make room on the active roster, the Suns placed reserve forward Paul
Shirley on the injured list with a bruised ego.
"To be honest, I was surprised to hear Paul was still on the active
roster," remarked Head Coach Mike D'Antoni. "I read that drivel he wrote
on Suns.com, but I didn't think he was actually suiting up for games.
Had I known, I might have even put that April Fool in there once in a
while."
