Brian Grant was recently asked about his minutes in Phoenix, and how it felt
to sit on the bench, watching his teammates run and gun.
"And I said, 'You know what? I'm all right with it,' " Grant said. "I always
want to play and I always stay ready, but I'm OK with it because I'm so
enjoying my time with these guys."
The Suns are at a crossroads, trying to pull themselves from the worst funk
of the season, defensive and energy lapses contributing to eight losses in 16
games. But Grant, 34, suggests all isn't lost. Seven games, starting tonight
at Seattle, remain. A push in the playoffs is possible.
Most important, the Suns have great chemistry.
"These guys who have been here and nowhere else, they don't know what it's
like to play on a team where you don't like a couple people and there's
constant tension," Grant said. "That's just like an extra little nag in the
back of your neck."
Grant, in his 12th season, has played in Sacramento, Portland, Miami and Los
Angeles. He's been in locker rooms where one player whispers about another.
He's seen cliques form, rumors start.
But here, "When there's a basketball problem or you start to see tension,"
Grant said, "it gets worked out quick. Because somebody says, 'Why'd you say
that about such-and-such.' They're right here. Let's talk about it."
That approach starts with Steve Nash, who shares captain duties with Grant
and Shawn Marion.
"He's the MVP," Grant said, "and other than seeing him play, I wouldn't know.
Every other team that I've seen, the best player, they let you know it. . . .
But with him, he's so subtle and laid-back and humble, and when it's coming
from the top, it trickles down. It's like, if you're being an (expletive) and
Steve Nash isn't, it's really going to make you look like an (expletive)."
Told of Grant's comments, Nash wasn't sure how to respond. He just thinks a
successful team can't afford to bicker, especially amid adversity. Even now,
so late in the season, he views the Suns as a new team. They've been together
since October, but so many guys have missed time with injuries.
"It takes time to learn the characteristics and chemistry needed, especially
under duress," Nash said. "But we're getting there. We got a great start
because we like each other and we hang out together."
Coach Mike D'Antoni recently said two kinds of basketball chemistry exist:
floor chemistry and locker room chemistry. The first is essential. The
second, a luxury.
"Everybody has egos in this business, but you have to be able to put it aside
when you get on the court," D'Antoni said. "That's where the chemistry is
really important. If you also have it in the locker room, that just makes it
really fun to play. That's the ultimate."
Nash goes back to something he's heard and often repeats. And that's when
everything ends, players won't remember the night Marion had 30 against the
Clippers or the night Boris Diaw slapped a triple-double on the Mavericks.
What they'll remember is time spent with teammates. The part Grant so much
enjoys.
"Next year could be it for me. If I could finish up my career doing (this),
playing a little vs. playing a lot and being stressed out every day," he
said with a pause. "I would take this."
