Denver coach George Karl thought he had the shooting power forward he wanted this summer. Karl saw him again Saturday and couldn't bear even to revisit his team's summer dalliance with Suns center Channing Frye, the Valley-bred player who chose signing with the Suns over the Nuggets' wooing. "I don't really want to talk about Channing," Karl said, perhaps half-jokingly. "I'm kind of mad at him. We kind of wanted him here. He gave us a little bit of a tease, and we didn't get him. "I wanted to fire a couple guys who said they were going to deliver him for us. We do have a couple of his friends on our staff who were, 'We'll get 'em, we'll get 'em.' The honor and opportunity to play with Steve Nash, I might even take that over Denver." Frye considered Cleveland and Washington, too, but narrowed his choice to Phoenix and Denver before agreeing to a two-year, $4.08 million contract with a player option on the second year. After going in and out of the rotation in Portland and Phoenix's plans to start him were among the things that appealed to him. In Denver, he was concerned how much time there would be left with Nene, Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen in big-man roles. "It was a tough decision," Frye said. "It's a great place. I like George Karl and everything he's about and the team and everything they're about and winning and how they help their players. I feel like I'm in the right place. I just had to go somewhere where I was going to give myself the best opportunity. Hopefully, I can continue to work this out here. I just had to go to the place where I really felt like I was going to really get an opportunity to play." Frye entered Saturday with 2-of-14 3-point shooting in the previous three games. Frye did not shoot in the first quarter but made 2 of 3 in the second quarter when the Suns opened a lead as big as 15. Starry Stoudemire Suns power forward Amar'e Stoudemire's 447,776 votes gave him a healthy lead for the Western Conference starting center job in the All-Star Game over Lakers center Andrew Bynum (299,484 votes). "I don't get into it quite yet until we get close to the finish," said Stoudemire, who launched a video campaign starring David Spade as his coach. "Let the fans have fun with it and focus on the season and getting wins. When you're winning, that's when you get the most votes." Barbosa mending Suns head athletic trainer Aaron Nelson said guard Leandro Barbosa is "progressing well and getting stronger" from the left-ankle sprain he suffered Nov. 29.
