Re: [閒聊] John Sickels Top 20 Prospects for 2013
Jhang vs. Mathisen
My last comparison. I don’t see what separates Jhang from Mathisen
by half a grade and 11 spots. Both are inexperienced defenders with
the raw tools and athleticism to stick at the position long-term.
Both have the potential to be above-average hitters. They performed
nearly identically in rookie ball this year. In Mathisen’s favor,
he’s about seven months younger and has a leaner body. But is that
really enough to earn an extra half-grade. Personally, I like Jhang
better, because he hits left-handed and I see more power potential from him.

yes, it is enough. 6 months can mean a lot and Mathisen has a better body

That’s putting it mildly. Believe it or not, though, Jhang gets
to first in average time.

Jhang is an average runner and above-average athlete, which is pretty
amazing for his size. The only concern with his body is that he might
lose some agility and speed as he ages, since he’s carrying so much
weight. That said, from what I’ve read he’s actually gotten into
much better shape over the course of the season, and I see enough
athleticism in him that he should easily be able to stick at catcher
assuming he develops the necessary skills. I don’t see too much reason
to worry about his body.
It’s not like he’s 5’8" 250 or anything. He’s just stocky.
And speed is not very important to his long-term value.

I talked for a while at a GCL game last summer with a scout who
was following the Pirates. He said he’d about written off Jhang
when he first saw him, based on the body, but after watching him
play he’d changed his mind. This included clocking him to first.
What I’m really curious about is whether he develops power.

He should. Already has, depending on how you look at it. It’s true
that he didn’t hit for any power in the GCL this year, but that’s
a 145 PA sample, which doesn’t mean much. He had an ISO over .200
in the Australian Academy league in 2011, easily the best in the league.
That was a small sample too, though, and the competition wasn’t exactly
fierce. But considering that he projects for power and has already shown
the ability to hit for power in games (pretty sure AAP is a wood-bat
league, though I’m not 100% on that), I’m relatively optimistic about it.
