Rangers-Giants position-by-position breakdown SF's pitching staff to be tested by Texas' explosive offense The World Series will feature one team seeking its first championship, and another franchise looking for its first title in more than five decades. A piece of history will be on the line for both the Rangers and Giants, who appear to provide a classic contrast in American and National League style. First, there are the Rangers, who are riding an ace-high pitching staff and a lineup arrayed with on-base and power threats. Cliff Lee will take his postseason resume -- which features a 1.26 ERA and wins in seven of his eight outings -- into Game 1 for Texas, and he'll be backed up by an offense that features sluggers Josh Hamilton, Vladimir Guerrero and Nelson Cruz. And then there's the Giants, who held on down the stretch to take the division from their rival, the San Diego Padres. San Francisco boasts one of the league's best pitching staffs, a unit represented by ace Tim Lincecum and closer Brian Wilson. The Giants notched the best team ERA in baseball, while Texas was the fifth-highest scoring team in the Majors. Texas never had won a postseason series before beating the pride of the American League East -- the Rays and Yankees -- consecutively. The Giants, meanwhile, have lost the World Series three times since relocating from New York and haven't been able to win it all since 1954. So which team has the edge, and is it possible to tell anything from a season in which they didn't play each other? Maybe not, but what follows is an in-depth look at the World Series teams -- position-by-position -- through the eyes of a panel of MLB.com reporters. Mix them up, compare and contrast, and let us know which team measures up best in your opinion. CATCHER Rangers Bengie Molina: .249 BA, 5 HRs, 36 RBIs Matt Treanor: .211 BA, 5 HRs, 27 RBIs Giants Buster Posey: .305 BA, 18 HR, 67 RBIs Eli Whiteside: .238 BA, 4 HRs, 10 RBIs The Rangers acquired Molina for his leadership, and he helped stabilize the position after his arrival. The eldest of the ubiquitous catching clan has said that he may retire after the season, which could make this series his swan song. Treanor caught 28 percent of attempted basestealers in his backup role, giving the Rangers an effective defensive tandem. The Giants traded Molina in order to make room for Posey, a tactic that has proven to be a success. Posey has broken out and established himself not only as a prime candidate for the NL Rookie of the Year Award, but also as one of the league's top offensive backstops. Now, the game's biggest stage is calling for an encore performance. Edge: Giants FIRST BASE Rangers Mitch Moreland:.255 BA, 9 HRs, 25 RBIs Jorge Cantu: .256 BA, 11 HRs, 56 RBIs Giants Aubrey Huff: .290, 26 HR, 86 RBIs Travis Ishikawa: .266 BA, 3 HRs, 22 RBIs First base has been a bit of a weak spot for the Rangers this season, and they traded former first-round draftee Justin Smoak as part of the package to acquire Lee. Moreland stepped into that void and hit enough to hold onto the job. Texas has gotten offense from the middle infield, allowing Moreland to blend into the back end of the batting order. Huff has been one of the most consistent parts of San Francisco's offensive engine, and he's currently enjoying the postseason spotlight for the first time in his 11-year career. Huff, who signed with San Francisco as a free agent in the winter, wound up leading the team in home runs and RBIs and logging career-best marks in walks and on-base percentage. Edge: Giants SECOND BASE Rangers Ian Kinsler: .286 BA, 9 HRs, 45 RBIs Andres Blanco: .277 BA, 0 HRs, 13 RBIs Giants Freddy Sanchez: .292 BA, 7 HRs, 47 RBIs Mike Fontenot: .283 BA, 1 HRs, 25 RBIs Kinsler has evolved into a complete ballplayer, capably fielding his position and providing an intriguing mix of talents on offense. He slumped in the power department this season, but walked at a career-high pace and remained a strong baserunner. Kinsler's power could reassert itself at any moment, and he does most of his damage against left-handed pitchers. Sanchez provided much of the same mix of skills as Kinsler this season, albeit with less power and less speed on the basepaths. Sanchez walked less and struck out more than Kinsler, but he also made just four errors over the course of the season. Like many of his teammates, Sanchez, a three-time All-Star, is getting his first chance to shine on the postseason stage. Edge: Rangers SHORTSTOP Rangers Elvis Andrus: .265 BA, 0 HRs, 35 RBIs, 32 SB Andres Blanco: .277 BA, 0 HRs, 13 RBIs Giants Juan Uribe: .248 BA, 24 HRs, 85 RBIs Edgar Renteria: .276 BA, 3 HRs, 22 RBIs You may not be able to tell from the statistics, but Andrus is a dynamic speed player who has helped transform the Rangers into a winning club. Andrus finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year balloting last year and earned an All-Star berth as a reserve this season, and after a cold second half offensively, he's managed to hit .333 in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Uribe provided the back-breaking run in two games in the last round, one on a sacrifice fly and one on a late home run. The Giants have used him at both shortstop and third base, counting on his glove and outsized power for his position. The Giants can also go to veteran Renteria when they want a change of pace, allowing Uribe to start at the hot corner. Edge: Rangers THIRD BASE Rangers Michael Young: .284 BA, 21 HRs, 91 RBIs Jorge Cantu: .256 BA, 11 HRs, 56 RBIs Giants Mike Fontenot: .283 BA, 1 HRs, 25 RBIs Pablo Sandoval: .268 BA, 13 HRs, 63 RBIs Juan Uribe: .248 BA, 24 HRs, 85 RBIs Young, the longest-tenured Ranger, had played the second-most games of any active player without making the playoffs before this season. The six-time All-Star slowed down in the second half -- much like Andrus -- but has been a key offensive player for Texas. Young sees a lot of pitches from the second spot of the order, priming the Texas lineup to score behind him. The Giants expected more from Sandoval this year and have fought to weather the effects of his missing production. They've even gone to Fontenot and Uribe at times to get Sandoval's glove out of the lineup, a trend they may continue in the World Series. Fontenot, a natural second baseman, has chipped in with moderate offense since he was acquired from the Cubs. Edge: Rangers OUTFIELD Rangers Josh Hamilton: .360 BA, 32 HRs, 100 RBIs, 1.048 OPS Nelson Cruz: .318 BA, 22 HRs, 78 RBIs, 17 SB David Murphy: .291 BA, 12 HRs, 65 RBIs, 14 SB Jeff Francoeur: .249 BA, 13 HRs, 65 RBIs Julio Borbon: .276 BA, 3 HRs, 42 RBIs, 15 SB Giants Pat Burrell: .252 BA, 20 HRs, 64 RBIs Andres Torres: .268 BA, 16 HRs, 63 RBIs Cody Ross: .269 BA, 14 HRs, 65 RBIs Nate Schierholtz: .242 BA, 3 HRs, 17 RBIs Hamilton provided an MVP-caliber season for the Rangers, and he followed that up by helping to sink the Yankees with four home runs in the AL Championship Series. Cruz has proven to be an ample power threat, and Murphy has chipped in with contributions on both offense and defense. The Rangers have a lot of weapons in the outfield and can beat teams in a lot of ways. Ross had a huge star turn in the NLCS, and Torres has had a decent year as San Francisco's leadoff man. Burrell, who played with Huff long ago at the University of Miami, was reborn by his reentry to the NL. The veteran was released early in the season by Tampa Bay, but righted himself after he was signed by the Giants. Edge: Rangers DESIGNATED HITTER Rangers Vladimir Guerrero: .300 BA, 29 HRs, 115 RBIs Giants Pablo Sandoval: .268 BA, 13 HRs, 63 RBIs Guerrero remains a scary hitter to face even at this point in his career, and the move to DH has helped keep him healthy and in the lineup for the Rangers. Guerrero played in his most games since 2006 this year, logging peaks in home runs and RBIs that he hadn't seen since that season. He's been quiet in this year's postseason and has never played in the World Series. This is the position people have been calling for Sandoval for his entire career, and he'll get a chance to see how it fits when the Giants travel to Texas. Sandoval, a switch-hitter, saw his bat go oddly quiet against right-handers this season, but he remained productive against southpaws. Sandoval didn't hit much on the road this year, but can make up for that in Texas. Edge: Rangers STARTING PITCHERS Rangers Cliff Lee: 12-9, 3.18 ERA C.J. Wilson: 15-8, 3.35 ERA Colby Lewis: 12-13, 3.72 ERA Tommy Hunter: 13-4, 3.73 ERA Giants Tim Lincecum: 16-10, 3.43 ERA Matt Cain: 13-11, 3.14 ERA Jonathan Sanchez: 13-9, 3.07 ERA Madison Bumgarner: 7-6, 3.00 ERA Lee is the man everyone will be watching, and the Rangers got him for precisely this moment in time. Wilson, Lewis and Hunter have provided quality innings for Texas this season, but the Rangers may opt to go to a three-man rotation for the World Series. That would give them one more long reliever and allow Lee to pitch in Games 1, 4 and 7. Lincecum, the two-time defending NL Cy Young Award winner, fronts a homegrown rotation of impressive talents. Cain has been a durable workhorse for the Giants in recent seasons, and Sanchez took a big step forward this season. The Giants have gotten this far on pitching, and their best chance at beating Texas centers on their rotation having a big series. Edge: Giants MIDDLE RELIEVERS Rangers Derek Holland: 3-4, 4.08 ERA Darren Oliver: 1-2, 2.48 ERA Darren O'Day: 6-2, 2.03 ERA Alexi Ogando: 4-1, 1.30 ERA Michael Kirkman: 0-0, 1.65 ERA Dustin Nippert: 4-5, 4.29 ERA Giants Sergio Romo: 5-3, 2.18 ERA Santiago Casilla: 7-2, 1.95 ERA Jeremy Affeldt: 4-3, 4.14 ERA Javier Lopez: 4-2, 2.34 ERA Ramon Ramirez: 1-3, 2.99 ERA The Rangers have gotten some good work out of their bullpen this season, and Holland has proven to be an effective swingman. Oliver, a veteran of several postseasons past, may be entrusted with some of the most delicate situations. Texas has gotten good work from O'Day and Ogando, and will have some interesting situational arms in the middle-inning mix. The Giants have just gotten tremendous relief pitching all season long, and that doesn't figure to change in the World Series. Romo and Casilla provide a pair of strikeout artists, and Lopez and Ramirez are a pair of seasoned veterans. Affeldt has had a difficult season, but the depth of San Francisco's relief staff has kept the Giants from really noticing it. Edge: Rangers CLOSER Rangers Neftali Feliz: 4-3, 2.73 ERA, 40 SV Giants Brian Wilson: 3-3, 1.81 ERA, 48 SV Feliz has had a remarkable rookie season, setting new league records for saves and save percentage by a first-year player. His presence at the end of the game has undoubtedly helped the Rangers make their surprising leap toward the division championship. Feliz worked in three games but wasn't able to log any saves during the ALCS. Wilson has leaped onto the national scene during the postseason, leaving an indelible memory with his epic beard and candid postgame quotes. And his pitching hasn't been all bad, either. Wilson, an All-Star in two of the past three years, has gone nine postseason innings without allowing an earned run, and he has more strikeouts (12) that hits allowed (four) in that span. Edge: Giants BENCH Rangers Matt Treanor: .211 BA, 5 HRs, 27 RBIs Jorge Cantu: .256 BA, 11 HRs, 56 RBIs Andres Blanco: .277 BA, 0 HRs, 13 RBIs David Murphy: .291 BA, 12 HRs, 65 RBIs, 14 SB Jeff Francoeur: .249 BA, 13 HRs, 65 RBIs Giants Aaron Rowand: .230 BA, 11 HRs, 34 RBIs Nate Schierholtz: .242 BA, 3 HRs, 17 RBIs Edgar Renteria: .276 BA, 3 HRs, 22 RBIs Jose Guillen: .258 BA, 19 HRs, 77 RBIs Pablo Sandoval: .268 BA, 13 HRs, 63 RBIs Murphy and Francoeur are decent bench bats for the Rangers, and both are defensively skilled enough to man regular time in the outfield. Cantu's bat went cold after he was acquired by the Rangers, and Blanco is strictly a glove man. Rowand and Renteria are both notable for their age and experience, and both have had big moments en route to a World Series championship. Sandoval's bat could wake up at any moment, but if it doesn't, the Giants could be a little light. Edge: Rangers COACHING STAFF Rangers Manager: Ron Washington Bench coach: Jackie Moore Hitting coach: Clint Hurdle Pitching coach: Mike Maddux Third-base coach: Dave Anderson First-base coach: Gary Pettis Giants Manager: Bruce Bochy Bench coach: Ron Wotus Hitting coach: Hensley Meulens Pitching coach: Dave Righetti Third-base coach: Tim Flannery First-base coach: Roberto Kelly This is a close one, but it's worth noting that Washington guided the Rangers to postseason series victories over the Yankees and Rays -- the teams with the AL's two best records during the regular season. The Rangers seem to be a team playing better than the sum of their parts, a compliment that any coaching staff would love to hear. The Giants aren't just outperforming their expectations, they seem to be tactically getting an edge from their coaching staff. Bochy, who managed Game 6 of the NLCS the way Yankees manager Joe Girardi should have managed Game 6 of the ALCS, may have gotten the best of counterpart Charlie Manuel in the NLCS, a chess match that provided some interesting late-inning drama. Now, Bochy has to pull out one more series for his team, which has been playing for its life for more than a month. Edge: Rangers FANS Rangers: Hitter-friendly dimensions, the designated hitter, the "Claw" and "Antlers." Giants: McCovey Cove, fog horn for home runs, swirling winds. Both franchises are hungering for a championship, and both have suffered long and hard along the way to this moment. Both teams have banded together down the stretch, rallying around each other to play some inspired baseball in front of their home crowds. This series may well come down to the home-field advantage endemic to Interleague Play, namely whether the Giants can find a hot hitter to serve as DH and whether the Rangers can still find offense on their own in an NL park. Edge: Even. These games will be won on the field, not in the stands. 資料來源: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20101025&content_id=15828276&vkey= news_mlb&c_id=mlb PS:抱歉因為最近很忙沒時間細翻~~Rangers GO GO GO -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 210.243.5.253
