Kotchman brought a slick glove to the team and a surprisingly good bat, but he is a free agent. The native of St. Petersburg made $750,000 in 2011 and should get a nice raise if he tests the free-agent waters. The Rays must decide whether a slick-fielding first baseman with minimal power is worth the extra salary bump. If Kotchman does not return, this could be a position the Rays fill by signing a free agent, or perhaps by moving Ben Zobrist to first. Russ Canzler, who was the International League Most Valuable Player while playing for Triple-A Durham, could be a long-shot candidate to earn some playing time at the position. After getting off to a start slowed by injuries in 2011, Longoria came on to finish strong. If anybody is the straw that stirs the drink for the Rays, Longoria is the guy and it's not a stretch to think he will have a monster season in 2012. After all, he is one of the best players in the game. If Upton is on next year's team, he will be the starter in center field. If he is not, that job will go to Desmond Jennings,who will be the left fielder if Upton returns. That leaves right field, which appears to be Matt Joyce's job to lose. Assuming that Shoppach does not return based on salary alone, the remaining candidates are John Jaso, Robinson Cherinos, and Jose Lobaton -- none of whom distinguished themselves in 2011. Do the Rays trade for a catcher? And the proper response to that question is another question: Who do you trade for? Though he'll be 38, Damon still has his legs, which he proved on many occasions, and he's a legitimate leader in the clubhouse. Damon made $5.25 million in his first season with the Rays; would that be enough to bring him back for a second season? Or would he accept less to remain close to his home in Orlando? If the entire group is brought back, they will have James Shields, David Price, Jeremy Hellickson, Jeff Niemann, and Wade Davis. However, the fact the Rays need offense will likely prompt the team to move at least one of their starters. If that happens, Alex Cobb or Matt Moore could easily step into the fray. Of the incumbents, Shields has the highest price tag. The Rays can either bring him back at $7 million or buy him out at $2 million. Price and Niemann are arbitration eligible. The problem with trading one of their starters is the fact that pitching depth can disappear quickly with one or more injuries. 先發投手一直是我們的強項如果沒有任何人被交易的話我們依然擁有James Shields David Price Jeremy Hellickson Jeff Niemann及Wade Davis不變的輪值但光芒急需加強攻擊所以交易掉至少以上其中一位幾乎是必然的如果交易產生的話 Alex Cobb或Matt Moore將可以輕鬆補上其中一個空缺以上5人就屬Shields有最高的交易價值但是問題在於交易產生後如果有人受傷的話我們先發的深度將會消失不見 P.S.其實我覺得還好如交易盾哥Moore補上如果有人受傷 Cobb和接近ready的 Torres都可以補上關於這點我倒是很樂觀 RELIEF PITCHING: The Rays control Kyle Farnsworth and Joel Peralta, so there is no reason to expect either not to be back. They have a $3.3 million option on Farnsworth and Peralta is arbitration eligible. J.P. Howell is arbitration eligible, and though he had a down season while returning from left-shoulder surgery, he's a good beat to return to form in 2012 since most of his problems have stemmed from control issues. Juan Cruz is a free agent and is a good candidate to return to the team as well.
