The deal is for one year with Beltre holding an option for the second year. Peter Gammons is reporting that Beltre would be paid $9 million in 2010. The option would be worth $5 million. In essence, it's a two-year deal with an opt-out after one year. At that rate -- an average of $7 million a year -- it's an easy deal for the Sox to make and gives them a tremendously strong defensive infield along with some more power in their lineup. Long-term, this suggests they do not believe thay can pry Adrian Gonzalez away from the Padres any time soon.
