WHEN TO CROSS THE LINE Q: I'm new to running and recently bought a pair of cross-training shoes. I was told by the salesperson that they're fine for beginning runners, but my more seasoned running friends tell me they're not. Who's right? A: Possibly both. It just depends on the type of cross-trainers you bought. Some cross-training models (such as the Adidas ClimaCool Striation, the New Balance 1005 or 790, and the Nike Air Max Specialist) are fine for light running because they're basically running shoes with different upper patterns and colors. But there are "true" cross-trainers out there that are designed specifically for baskedball, tennis, spinning, aerobics, and weight lifting. These shoes usually aren't appropriate for more than very light rinning. Generally speaking, if you're planning on running more than 3 days a week, at 3 miles or more per pop, you're better off in a running shoe for its cushioning, support, and flexibility. A running shoe will help keep you injury-free and allow you to run more comfortably. Save your cross-trainers, just wear them for other activities. -- TALENT is cheaper than table salt.
