Monica Seles & American Express Date : July 1st, 2004 Source : london-se1.co.uk and www24.americanexpress.com/campaigns/wimbledon/towerbridge.asp How to promote American Express credit cards? How about a special event during Wimbledon? This year, American Express launched a 4 days event called Wimbledon at Tower Bridge. During the event, tennis fans can attend fun matches, win tickets, see live concerts and enjoy many other activites. And admission is free! American Express found an interesting way to promote the event. On Monday, Monica Seles and John McEnroe played a match on a floating tennis court. Monica seemed to enjoy herself on the Thames river. Commuters crossing the river this morning did a double-take as a tennis court floated downriver from the London Eye to Tower Bridge with John McEnroe and Monica Seles playing a match. The floating tennis court was a publicity stunt by American Express to promote their Tennis at Tower Bridge event in Potters Fields Park this week. The court will be lifted from the barge onto a scaffolding platform constructed above the grass in the riverside park. Speaking after today’s game Seles said there had been no clear winner: "It was such a thrill to play with John on a barge on the Thames. I have never done anything even close to this before. I am thinking this was a dream." Monica Seles is one of the stars of the Wimbledon at Tower Bridge. She was also invited to the Pro Celebrity Tennis Night. Angus Deayton and Tony Hawks joined Pat Cash and Monica Seles for a pro-celebrity tennis evening at Potters Fields Park in aid of Sport Relief. Radio 1's Scott Mills was the host for the fundraising event, An Evening of Aces, which was the first night of the four-day Wimbledon at Tower Bridge event organised by American Express. Monica Seles and Pat Cash teamed up with Angus Deayton and Tony Hawks (author of Playing the Moldovans at Tennis) for a rapid-fire doubles contest in aid of Sport Relief. The matches were played on a tennis court delivered to the park by barge on Monday morning. American Express donated £700 to the charity for every game won, and £25 for ever Ace. Wimbledon at Tower Bridge promises to bring SW19 to SE1 for the final four days of the Championships. Big screens show live action from Wimbledon, and tennis challenges and instruction will enable members of the public to brush up their skills with a racket. Stalls selling strawberries and cream, champagne and Pimms have also been erected in the park. Admission is free and the event opens at 11am each day and will not finish until the close of play at Wimbledon.
