Daniels and his agent Tony Dutt each confirmed the deal this morning. A source with the Sonics said yesterday the team was prepared to lose its backup point guard, who spent the past two seasons in Seattle. He averaged career highs in points (11.2) and assists (4.1) last season.p> The Sonics were willing to give Daniels their mid-level exception of $5 million per year, but they were unwilling to go beyond three years primarily because of his age (30) and nagging knee problems last season. Daniels, the top point guard on the free-agent market, also drew serious consideration from Utah, the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland. He's expected to sign the contract Friday when the NBA lifts its moratorium on free-agent signings. Since the end of their 52-30 season, the Sonics moved quickly to retain All-Star guard Ray Allen, who agreed to a five-year, $80 million deal, but they lost coach Nate McMillan to Portland and center Jerome James to New York. The Sonics' focus now turns to restricted free agent Vladimir Radmanovic.
