當地時間下週二晚,美國隊將確定最後的12人名單。目前普遍認為超音速的 Nick
Collison 最可能被裁掉,另一個則可能是今年的榜眼秀 Kevin Durant,主教練 Mike

Kidd looks like the man for Team USA
Veteran guard has the respect of coaches and players as team prepares for
Olympic qualifier in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS -- Jason Kidd's jump shot may still be a little inconsistent and he
may have lost a half-step since he led Alameda St. Joseph of Notre Dame High
to the California title 15 years ago.
But when it comes to reverence, no player on the Team USA roster gets more
than Kidd, who is undefeated (28-0) in international competition and at 34,
the oldest player on the roster.
"It's nice when you earn somebody's respect. but it's better when you already
have it," Team USA Coach Mike Krzyzewski said about Kidd, who started every
game in the last two Olympic qualifiers and was on the team that won a gold
medal in the 2000 Olympics, the last major title for the U.S.
"He's got everyone's ultimate respect, from coaches to players. . . . Jason
has played more games than I've coached and that's a lot of games."
The secret to Kidd is his passion for the game, which still runs high. He
plays with the same high-octane energy as he did in high school. That has
been evident with his non-stop effort and willingness to help his teammates
at Team USA's training camp practices this week.
"The biggest thing is just understanding the international game," said Kidd,
who did not play in last year's World Championships in Japan. "The
three-point line is so close, you can fall in love with that, but that may
not be our strength.
"It's important that we also understand that the game is shorter [40 minutes
compared to NBA 48]. You don't have time to play catch-up. I've always felt
that when you play international, you start off thinking that you are down 10
because teams slow the games down because they don't want to run against us."
Before Team USA plays Venezuela to begin round-robin play in the FIBA
Americas Championship on Wednesday, Krzyzewski has to trim the roster from 14
players to 12.
"It will be a tough decision because all 14 of these guys have great
attitudes and they all get along," Krzyzewski said. "I think that whoever is
not selected, the other guys will feel bad about it. That's because they all
get together so well."
Based on the first three days of workouts, the two most likely candidates to
be cut are Seattle SuperSonics forwards Nick Collison and Kevin Durant.
Although Team USA is already thin inside with Chris Bosh withdrawing from the
team because of a foot injury and Collison's strength is his defense and
willingness to bang inside, Krzyzewski seems to be inclined to feature more
versatile perimeter players, including sharpshooters Michael Redd and Mike
Miller.
In Durant, the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, Krzyzewski said:
"He's a special player but he's young. That's just the way it is.
"He's solid and he keeps getting better every day, but it's going to come
down to what we need right now."
To get Team USA ready for the tournament, a select group of young players
have been put together to simulate a typical international team, coached by
P.J. Carlesimo and Jay Triano.
Jason Kapono and J.J. Redick have played the role of three-point shooters
with Devin Harris and Aaron Brooks working in the backcourt. Channing Frye,
David Lee and Al Jefferson have rotated as big men with versatile Andre
Iguodala and Jeff Green stepping in wherever needed.
"All of our guys have gone out and played well. They've been consistent,"
said Carlesimo, hired this summer to coach the SuperSonics after working as
an assistant for San Antonio.
"It's tough for some of them because we are really asking them to not play
the way they are used to play in order to give us the right look. . . .
Especially defensively, where we're trying to pack it in and go underneath a
lot of pick and rolls. Giving the players some of the things they are going
to see not only in this tournament but also next year."
While Kapono and Redick have done a good job knocking down perimeter shots
and Lee and Jefferson have battled well inside, Carlesimo said he has really
been impressed by the play of Iguodala and Green.
