‧Yung-Chi Chen, second baseman: Chen, 23, has been put on an accelerated
pace to the big leagues. He opened the 2006 season in rookie ball, and by
the end of it he was playing in Double-A.
Chen is a good contact hitter who uses the entire field. He hit .324 in
2006, leading all Mariners minor leaguers. He also is a shrewd hitter who
makes constant adjustments. He has average speed but is an excellent
baserunner.
Chen doesn't have particularly good range, but he made only eight errors
all season, including none in 35 Double-A games.
"We really pushed him," Bavasi says. "And we pushed him hard. But I think
it will be good for him. He's learned how to handle adversity."
