Pi-Feng Chao erupted for 26 points and grabbed six rebounds in Samara to lead Cathay Pacific to a comfortable win (75-69) over ADCF Unimed (BRA) in FIBA Women's World League 2004 action on Tuesday. Chao was lethal from long range, burying eight of 15 shots from behind the three-point arc as the club from Chinese Taipai stormed out to an early lead and cruised home. The loss for the Brazilian side overshadowed an outstanding individual performance from their Soeli Garvao Zakrzeski, who had 20 points and 17 boards. In a match played in St Petersburg, Basketball Club Habana did just enough to win their clash with a WKBL (KOR) select team, prevailing 90-85. The Cuban outfit trailed 39-37 at half-time but asserted itself after the break, outscoring their opponents 29-21 in the frame. Soria Baro Yulizeny led five players in double figures scoring with 21 points in the triumph. She also had seven rebounds and five assists. Jung Eun Park had a game-high 26 points and also dished out seven assists in a losing cause. Hosts Volgaburmash Samara (RUS), winners of the inaugural tournament in 2003, play their first game later Tuesday against BK Lotos of Poland. That will be staged in Samara.
