Yanks catch Alex's June bug

The latest All-Star voting totals showed Alex Rodriguez was leading the
entire civilized baseball world with more than 1.4 million tallies to date.
Who knows where those numbers will be by the time Rodriguez closes out his
sizzling June.
Yesterday, Rodriguez racked up three more hits and knocked in two more runs
as the Yankees closed out their sweep of the Diamondbacks with a 7-1 victory
at the Stadium.
The Yankees' winning streak now stands at nine, the longest by any team this
season.
"I think he's relaxed, I think that's the best part of Alex right now," Joe
Torre said after Rodriguez's 3-for-4 afternoon. "Because if you're relaxed,
all of a sudden you just allow your ability to do what it does. He's got
special ability. But I think the best thing I see about Alex right now is
that he's having some fun and he just feels very comfortable right now."
Rodriguez's afternoon got off to a somewhat humble start when he came to bat
in the first with the bases loaded and none out after consecutive singles by
Melky Cabrera, Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu. Last Thursday, Rodriguez launched
the 15th grand slam of his career in a similar scenario. But this time all
Rodriguez could manage against a wild Doug Davis was a walk, which forced in
Cabrera with the game's first run and began Davis' slide.
"He was a little bit wild and he wasn't in the strike zone early," Rodriguez
said. "We wanted to make him come to the strike zone and get him out of
there."
Rodriguez jumped on Davis in the third inning when the Bombers began to build
on their 2-1 lead. After Abreu walked to open the inning, Rodriguez doubled
to left to bring Abreu all the way around to score for a 3-1 lead. Rodriguez
advanced to third on an error by Arizona left fielder Scott Hairston before
being knocked in by Hideki Matsui's double for a 4-1 lead.
Rodriguez singled and scored again in the Yankees' three-run seventh before
ending his day with an eighth-inning single. He finished with three hits,
scored twice and added a pair of RBI to boost his major league-leading total
to 68, more than halfway to last season's total of 121.
After managing only 11 RBI in 102 at bats in a forgettable month of May,
Rodriguez has 23 RBI in 13 games in just 46 June at-bats. He is also hitting
a cool .391 this month. With numbers like those, perhaps Rodriguez might want
to petition to have a 31st day added to the month.
"It's easier when the team is playing well," said Rodriguez, who made his
first start at DH yesterday since Aug. 20 of last season against the Red Sox.
"Pitching and hitting and all that stuff is contagious."
