Lecce are the revelations of Serie A this season and the southerners will be
looking to build on their excellent start against Fiorentina.
The team from Apulia - the heel on the boot-shaped Italian peninsula - are in a
lofty third spot in Serie A.
However, they will be beware of a Fiorentina team that won at Reggina in
midweek under caretaker coach Sergio Buso following Monday's sacking of
Emiliano Mondonico.
Lecce, usually a club that battles against relegation in the top flight, ended
last season with an excellent run of 13 points out of a possible 15 in their
last five matches including wins against Serie A heavyweights Internazionale
and Juventus.
Perhaps surprisingly, given that success, the club chose not to renew coach
Delio Rossi's contract in the summer but under his successor Zdenek Zeman there
has been a seamless transition.
The club has won four, drawn three and lost one of its eight games this season
and will be pleased to have drawn 2-2 with Internazionale in midweek after
going 2-0 down against the visitors from Milan.
Most importantly of all, Lecce are the top-scoring team in the division and
their tally of 20 goals in eight top-flight matches is three better than the
next best, leaders Juventus.
There is good news from the training ground for Zeman as both Alex Pinardi and
Mirko Vucinic were able to train normally on Friday and should be available for
the trip to Tuscany.
As for Fiorentina, Buso started well with that morale-boosting win in Reggio
Calabria and the club from Tuscany look to have been unperturbed by the
dismissal of Mondonico who was sacked after criticising the directors.
Former Internazionale coach Hector Cuper has been linked with the vacancy in
Florence although the Argentinian is also being headhunted by his former club
Real Mallorca who themselves dismissed Benito Floro on Monday.
Buso will be on the touchline on Sunday, though, and he will be eager that his
team rekindle their goal touch at the Stadio Artemio Franchi where they have
not scored since September 26 when Dario Dainelli was the marksmen against
Cagliari.
Enzo Maresca was one of the heroes of the win against Reggina and he is anxious
that his team-mates remain hungry against Lecce.
"We must have the same mental attitude when facing any team," said the former
Juventus and West Bromwich Albion player.
"All teams must be faced on the same psychological level; it doesn't matter if
it's Lecce, Reggina or Juve.
"Now we must be more consistent. It's true that we have played better in the
past two games, but now it's important to confirm all the good things we have
shown."
