[新聞] Juve plead for leniency
Fiorentina
Juventus' lawyer pleaded for leniency on Sunday as the club continue to
appeal against their relegation to Serie B for match-fixing.
Last week, a sports tribunal meted out sanctions for Juve, Milan, Lazio and
Fiorentina, who were all found guilty of corruption, but The Old Lady were
the hardest hit, with demotion to Serie B and the encumbrance of a 30-point
deduction.
It is that handicap that is the focus of the Bianconeri's appeal, with Cesare
Zaccone, the lawyer representing the club, stating his case that the effects
could seriously harm the careers of the players who remain at the club.
"Just to survive in Serie B next season we estimate that Juventus will have
to earn about 80 points - equivalent to winning 27 of their 40 matches,"
Zaccone told the five-man appeal court panel.
"The career for a footballer is short and some of our best players are world
champions.
"None of them wants to risk two years in Serie B or, worse still, relegation
to Serie C1 [Italy's third division]."
The court is hopeful of delivering its verdicts in time for the July 25
deadline Uefa has set the Italian Football Federation to submit its list of
teams to compete in Europe in the forthcoming campaign.
The Federal Court's president Piero Sandulli confirmed the appeals process is
expected to be wrapped up by Monday, with a final announcement made shortly
afterwards.
"The debate will be closed on Monday and the decisions will arrive between
Tuesday and Wednesday," said Sandulli.
Meanwhile, Juve president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has reaffirmed his
declaration that the club is not for sale.
"The shareholders dismiss the possibility of a sale and, as president, I take
full responsbility," he told Corriere dello Sport.
Gigli is keeping his fingers crossed for a positive appeals verdict and
praised the attitude of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who has vowed to stick
by the beleaguered club.
"I hope we can remain in Serie A, even if it is more realistic to prepare for
Serie B, but perhaps without the points deduction," he added.
"That would allow us to come back immediately and keep hold of most of our
players."
Refering to Buffon, Gigli added: "Heaven knows, maybe Buffon wanted to take
the challenge that [former coach] Fabio Capello didn't want to take.
"I'm confident about Buffon, and I hope other players will remain as well."
