New Fiorentina recruit Arturo Lupoli has revealed that he snubbed a contract
extension offer from Arsenal.
The 19-year-old, who is currently on loan with Derby County, agreed to a
five-year contract with the Tuscan side on Monday and will return to Italy on
a free transfer in July.
「Arsenal offered me an important contract extension, but I didn't even think
about it,」 said Lupoli to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
「Inter, Milan, Udinese, Napoli and Torino had shown an interest in me, as
well as Valencia,」 continued the Under-21 international.
「In the end, however, I chose Fiorentina. Florence is a beautiful city and
this is an ambitious club that has decided to invest in young players.」
Lupoli landed in England when he was 16, having grown up in Parma's youth
system, but admits that the decision to return to the peninsula goes back to
some months ago.
「Last summer I went with Arsenal to Austria and boss Arsene Wenger told me
that I needed to play elsewhere on loan in order to have more playing time,」
he added.
「I have adapted well to England, but this was a life choice for me and I
couldn't say no to Fiorentina.
「In any case, these have been three important years for me in England. I
have learned so much from champions like Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.」
