This may explain why he is so eager to be part of the alleged new American soccer boom (it's a boom if you buy an English premiership side, it's highly speculative arm-flailing if you buy an MLS team) and why the A's broke with their 2012-or-bust philosophy and traded prospects for Matt Holliday, an expensive corner outfielder and Scott Boras client whom Billy Beane now has to use and get rid of before next winter. Wolff was being accused of running a youth farm rather than trying to compete for the bigger prizes, and while the strategy is largely Beane's, one cannot help but wonder what Beane would do if Wolff said, "Uhh, I recognize no players on this team, which means nobody else does. That will no longer do." Hence, Holliday. ...... But if he suggests that hitters run to third base first, or if we hear that Beane suddenly wants to sign Francisco Rodriguez for five years and $75 million, we may want Lew to see a specialist.
